The UK has so often claimed to be a leader in marine protection. However, recent reports show that less than half of the UK's fishing quotas have been set with scientific advice for sustainability. Our Marine Protected Areas are also ravaged by industrial fishing boats. This is a wholesale destruction of marine life. It seems that the government has given a license to big industry to kill off fish populations once and for all. It's time to take a step back and rethink our approach to marine conservation. We need to prioritize the sustainability of our oceans and marine life. It's crucial to set fishing quotas with scientific advice and ensure that they are sustainable for the long term. Let's work together to protect our oceans and the creatures that call it home. And protect a sustainable future for local fishers. An estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic waste enter the oceans each year, wreaking havoc on marine ecosystems and biodiversity. As we celebrate our planet and continue towards protecting our oceans, we spotlight the work of the Sustainable Seas Initiative (SSI) and the EnerGeo Alliance membership who have reported removing nearly 2.5 million pounds of debris from our oceans. SSI works with geophysical crews, maritime operations, port operators, and sportfishing outlets to clean up marine environments daily by: - removing and disposing of debris encountered during operations - installing turtle guards - carrying out watches for marine mammals - employing preventative protective measures - reporting these activities This Earth day embodies the essence of SSI: to safeguard our oceans and nurture the abundant life they sustain. But this is just the beginning. We encourage everyone to get involved, whether through direct action, supporting policies that protect our seas, or raising awareness about the importance of marine conservation.
