Many marketers run from taking any sort of responsibility for revenue, Ultimately, most would agree that marketing is about growing the business - which is usually linked with revenue. The downside to not taking that responsibility is that when marketing is only looked at as a cost centre it's easy to axe it like positions in other cost centres within the organisation. When the company needs to cut costs it's where they start.

CEO: "Let's pause this and revisit next quarter." Followed a few weeks later by... CEO: "Why is pipeline lower this quarter?" Hmmm 😎 Marketing is not a tap you can turn on / off.

I've also seen this a lot in companies. Make cuts to make things work in the short term but then they always feel the consequences down the line

This is for me sort of like the Marketing paradox: when companies need to boost sales due to a rough time, they start with the marketing cutbacks. And in periods of growth, they increase budget. That makes no sense to me. Why would you reduce a “tool” that could help your business growth in difficult periods?

Marketing is one of the most misunderstood part of a business. In my 20 years in tech, not much has changed there. Its one of the first to experience resource and budget cuts when times are tough. The clock example is a good one. Marketing is not a cute influencer strategy, it’s the foundation of any business. It’s the “godfather” of sales, growth and sustainability.

Marketing budgets are being cut by people who misunderstand marketing and advertising. If you cut back on online advertising, you'll save money, right? But what about the role of branding, customer relations, a clear and well-communicated value proposition? You can't save money by disappearing off the radar. You can die because of it.  Yes - it's possible to operate with small budget, but you need to hire great, highly motivated professionals (which isn't cheap).

Absolutely! Your analogy of stopping a clock to save time brilliantly captures the potential pitfalls of cutting marketing budgets. In a dynamic business environment, marketing isn't just an expense; it's a critical investment that drives growth and sustains business momentum. It’s essential to keep investing wisely in marketing to ensure continuous growth and avoid stalling out.

So does that mean if someone says he/she is running out of time it means they are running out of $? If they say they are running out of time, then that tells me they waited too long to do marketing and it may be too late by the time they realize they should have started earlier. Marketing is not instant sales. It is not something you turn on when you need sales right away.
