🚲 Cycling has a powerful impact on mental health! 🌟 Impoverished communities face challenging circumstances at home on a daily basis. Basic necessities such as clean water, nutritious food, and adequate shelter can be scarce. This lack of access to fundamental resources not only impacts their physical health but also their mental well-being. The constant worry and uncertainty about meeting even the most basic needs can create a sense of helplessness on guardians that can be easily transmitted to the children. Through our programs, REACH aims to release these daily pressures while also providing education and skills development to the children. A safe environment, daily meals and elective activities help our students realise that there are opportunities to grow and have a prosperous future. However, when our students get on a bicycle, something magical happens. The simple act of pedalling brings them joy, freedom, and a sense of adventure. After a day of cycling with their peers in our REACH Riders Club, the students arrive home with less stress, higher levels of endorphins, and a renewed spirit of exploration! This positive change in their mental health not only benefits the kids but also strengthens the bond they have with their families. Cycling has proven to have a transformative effect on mental health, leading to positive changes that extend beyond themselves and impact their families on a day-to-day basis. The enthusiasm and commitment shown by the children inspire guardians to actively encourage their participation in the Side by Side ride. When the event for 2024 was announced, the community embraced it with open arms. Parents and guardians saw the positive impact it had on other children and actively encouraged their own kids to enrol and participate. This collective commitment to growth and development creates a stronger family unit. By providing these incredible children with the opportunity to experience the transformative power of cycling, we can make a lasting impact on their lives. Thank you Shelford Girls' Grammar for endorsing our work. 💙📚
This year we have been very fortunate to connect with Shelfordian Emily Williamson and learn about the important work she is doing in Siem Reap Cambodia as the founder of REACH Siem Reap. Emily graduated from Shelford in 2010 before continuing her education at Swinburne University. Having spent a life split between Asia and Australia, Emily was always eager to immerse herself in different cultures and communities. She visited Cambodia for the first time as an 18-year-old, and this was a turning point in her life. With the country and the Cambodian people leaving such a huge impact on her, she returned to volunteer several times before deciding at age 23 to pack up her life and move to Siem Reap. Unbeknownst to her, this decision would shape her entire career. Once in Cambodia, she worked for several years in marketing and fundraising before forming a vision of what could be and the incredible impact a well-run non-government organisation (NGO) could achieve for local communities. And so, REACH Siem Reap was born. In a recent Student Voice assembly Emily shared with us valuable insights into the ethos of the REACH Foundation and the powerful impact an individual can have on their community and beyond. The stories and examples she shared highlighted the importance of local empowerment and collaboration, reminding us all of the profound difference that can be made when we come together for a common cause. Emily’s journey from Shelford to Siem Reap serves as a powerful example to us of what can be achieved with passion, dedication, and a strong sense of purpose. As a school we have committed to supporting REACH Siem Reap for the remainder of 2024 through numerous awareness and fundraising campaigns. So please, Shelfordians and Shelford community, follow and support this wonderful organisation making a difference on a daily basis.

Did you know that Angkor Children's Hospital, a leading children's healthcare organisation in Cambodia, relies on donations, just like we do? 🏥 When kids in our community are sick or require specialised care, our social workers and families rely heavily on their services. ❤️🩹 To show our support for their vital work, last Sunday, five of our amazing students participated in their 10th annual fundraising cycling event. 🚴♂️ Two of our Grade 12 students and our Cycling Leader took part in the 17.5 km charity bike ride, while three of our youths volunteered their time to help with the logistics of the event, providing water to every participant. 🚲️ 🚰 This was an incredible opportunity for our youth to learn leadership skills and to give back to their community, as community service is at the heart of what we do. One of our youth pictured, dreams of being a Nurse one day, so this was a wonderful way for her to meet professionals in the field! 👩⚕️ . . . #REACHsiemreap #AHC #angkorhospitalforchildren #volunteerwork #fundraiser #fundraisingevent #cycleforagoodcause
