REAL ICE CAMBRIDGE BAY DIARY DAY 2 - 16 JANUARY 2024 🛷 Our first day of testing in the field started well, we successfully transported all of our equipment and two hydrogen cylinders to the designated site. Despite measuring the ice thickness (97 cm), creating a substantial hole, and mounting the pump, we encountered difficulties starting it due to the prolonged cold exposure during the snowmobile trip to our site, affecting both the battery power station and fuel cell power station. ❄️ The weather here in the Arctic can change very quickly, the team were also met with high winds bringing the temperature down to -40c on the ice. This was also paired with poor visibility making it difficult to even find our intended site which prolonged the teams exposure to these tough conditions. 🗂️ Our CEO, @Cían Sherwin, from Real Ice, met with Talia Maksagak, the Executive Director of Kitikmeot Chambers of Commerce. Cían and Talia discussed who Real Ice should connect with in the community and what was the best way to reach individuals as well as organizations in Cambridge Bay and communities within the Kitikmeot Region. 📝 Cian and Jacob Pantling (Cambridge University @climaterepaircambridge) also had a meeting with Zach Rychlo, a teacher at Kiilinik High School, who warmly welcomed us to their school for discussions and planning on how we could engage with their students. Zach introduced us to other teachers, some students who were still on campus after school, as well as the Principal and Vice Principal of the school. ❄️ Real Ice is currently conducting research in Cambridge Bay, utilizing a Hydrogen-powered pump as a key component of our approach. This collaborative initiative includes partnerships with the Centre for Climate Repair at Cambridge and Arctic Reflections. Stay informed about our advancements by following our day-to-day expedition diary in Cambridge Bay. #seaicerestoration #realice #climatesolutions #arcticseaice #restorationofhabitat #cambridgebay
