REAL ICE CAMBRIDGE BAY DIARY DAY 3 - 17 JANUARY 2024 ❄️ Today, we left with the guides early in the morning to make use of the milder weather currently surrounding the Arctic. We successfully initiated our hydrogen-fuelled pump for the first time, we were able to run the pump continuously for 4 hours. But it didn't all go to plan! We noticed an issue with our backup power station (battery-operated), our Chief Engineer, Andrew Woods (Andy), is investigating the inverter problem which means if we have any issues with our Hydrogen power station, we don't have a back up. 🎿 The team spent a total of 4 hours on the sea ice, running the power station which powered the pump and began taking measurements to monitor our progress. ❄️ To avoid the risk of overnight faults, we decided to bring the fuel cell box back to the research station. We opted for shorter runs to increase the probability of everything remaining operational for the remainder of our trip. Our pump was left in the ice-hole with ample insulation to test its ability to endure the night and remain operational the next morning. 🤝 Meanwhile, Cian received a warm welcome from Pam Langden at the Kitikmeot Heritage Society, who graciously provided a brief tour of their building and exhibits within. Pam invited Cían to return the next day to meet the team at the heritage society. 🤝 Later that day, Cían met with Talia Maksagak (Executive Director of the Kitikmeot Chambers of Commerce) again to talk about current & future community engagement in Cambridge Bay and communities within the wider Kitikmeot region. 🤝 Additionally, Cían connected with Brodie Larocque from the CHARS communications team to explore effective ways of communicating our research to the Polar Knowledge Network (Polar Knowledge Canada (POLAR) / Savoir polaire Canada (POLAIRE) and the local community. Brodie introduced Cían to Lynda from the Knowledge Engagement Management team. This will be to coordinate a public event at CHARS as part of their speaker series. ❄️ Real Ice is presently conducting research in Cambridge Bay, employing a Hydrogen-powered pump as a pivotal element of our approach. This collaborative initiative includes partnerships with the Centre for Climate Repair at Cambridge and Arctic Reflections. "Caring for our ocean is an ongoing commitment." Lita Faanunu, a PhD student at the University of the South Pacific, School of Marine Studies gives an encouraging message to Pacific countries undertaking Marine Spatial Planning in their waters. "Don't be discouraged... it's never too late. We still have hope to restore our marine resources for our generation and the children in the future." Marine Spatial Planning is a process used to plan the use and development of coastal and marine areas. Our programs in the Pacific are currently using this tool to determine how different uses in a specific marine area can coexist and be managed sustainably. A #land without #water: the scramble to stop #Jordan from running dry - Climate change, a wave of #refugees and poor planning are draining water supplies in Jordan. With rising tensions and #conflict outbursts in the #NearEast, #MiddleEast and #NorthAfrica, the critical role of water resources in #conflict, #climate and #migration in the broader region is addressed for #Jordan by Elizabeth Whitman in Nature 573, 20-23 (2019) of the Springer Nature Group. The plundering of Jordan’s #groundwater alarms scientists, as Jordan gets nearly two-thirds of its water from aquifers, and the supply is not sustainable. #Globalwarming has already hit the Middle East hard, and projections indicate this region will suffer profound problems in coming decades as #rainfall grows more #unpredictable, #risingtemperatures accelerate #evaporation and the land grows drier. Climate change isn’t the only problem that will stress Jordan’s limited water resources. The country has a rapidly #growingpopulation, which has swelled with #refugees from adjoining nations, including some 660,000 #Syrians who have fled #civilwar, according to the United Nations. And Jordan lacks the rich #oil and #gas deposits that many of its neighbours have, which limits its ability to pursue expensive options such as #desalinating #seawater. On top of that, decades of lax policy have allowed the plundering of its water supplies. The combination has rendered Jordan one of the poorest nations on the planet in terms of its water resources — and its struggles offer a window onto the issues that other water-stressed nations are increasingly facing. Elias Salameh, at the University of Jordan, agrees that time is running out: “We don’t have any additional water resources from within the country to be developed”. Humbling. Exciting. Challenging. Did I say humbling? PhD research has been one of the best but also one of the hardest things I've done for my career. Today I get to share the published results of my first research project, hot off the press, in Landslides by Springer Nature. We know from the #Pontbren project that began appropriately two decades ago, its academic study showed that the belts of trees planted to intercept peak overland hydrological flows, or to intercept water on the pasture land, had rapidly improved the soil structure and sent roots deep into the soil as early as two years. Even at this stage promoting greater infiltration of ground water. Utah State University's groundbreaking study, published in the Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management, had 26 Colorado River Basin managers using online tools to tackle water challenges. This immersive approach highlighted the potential of water banking for flexible management and sparked discussions on equity and innovative strategies. David Rosenberg, the study lead, sees this as a new era in adaptive water management.
