Happy Monday! The window is closing to get your business featured during the Oscars and all the pre and post red carpet buzz. In general, I've found that people are surprised that broadcast tv spots are as reasonable as they are. In fact, they seem to be in line with what people are paying for social media or Google ads. The difference is in the size of the audience and how quickly television can get eyeballs on your organization. Events like the Oscars can build brand awareness for your business in a short time frame, while also building the borrowed credibility that comes from associating with a well-known show and a much-watched news station.

Companies are willing to pump millions into being seen and the Super Bowl is the perfect place 👀 With 123.4 million viewers, making it the most watched telecast EVER, I think I’m right in saying they got the eyes on it that they needed. Something the Taylor Swift effect I’d say! What do you think? And company’s see massive value from videos getting eyeballs on they’re brand. And while you may not reach 123.4 million people (at least not straight away) using video increases your chance of being seen and noticed amongst a sea of competitors. Make those videos stand out, evoke emotion, or entertain and those chances increase even more. This week I listened to an episode of the podcast The Town with Matthew Belloni. He and media analyst, Steven Cahall, discuss flaws in WarnerBros Discovery's business model post-streaming wars. With its stock remaining stagnant, the main issue highlighted by Cahall is that unlike most media giants, WBD is not controlled by a singular shareholder. Instead, the company is governed by a more fragmented ownership structure, lacking a clear vision when responding to industry changes. Belloni adds to this thought, as WBD's recent loss of the NBA has made investors question what exactly the company's direction is. TNT, a network owned by WBD, was struggling to keep streaming rights of the NBA. Amidst this, TNT has started streaming other sports and scripted series on the network. Highlighted in this episode, there is no clear vision on spending from the WBD management team. Other choices by WB such as the renaming HBO to Max, or even its merger with Discovery, have consumers feel like WBD is this "two-headed monster" described by Cahall. With WBD's reliance on a linear television model, Cahall suggests that maybe WBD should propose even shutting down Max and licensing their library to somebody like Netflix, or pulling back on international spending. With a slew of many successful assets underneath their belt, it will be interesting to see if maintaining their portfolio will be beneficial to their revenue. What’s the secret sauce for pitching to top-tier broadcasters? A Sky News producer shares all! 🗣 A few weeks back, I was lucky enough to join a Roxhill Media pitching masterclass from Martin Kimber, Senior Producer for the Business Live with Ian King show. Martin’s an industry veteran and gave a great inside look at daily production cycles. But the highlights for me were his tips on pitching stories to cut through the noise: 🪒 Keep your pitches razor-sharp with just four sentences: Who you represent, their availability, why they should be featured, and the story angle. Remember: busy producers don't have time for long-winded pitches. 📖 Become an encyclopedia on your clients’ spokespeople. Deeply understand their full background and past experiences to identify unique and relevant angles that will grab attention. ⏱️ The prime pitching window for the show is between 11:30am – 4:30pm, after the morning broadcast frenzy but before prep for the afternoon show kicks into high gear. Martin also highlighted the value of personal connections. He's always open to discussing potential stories over a quick coffee – a great way to put a face to a name and build lasting relationships. Roxhill runs these kinds of events regularly, and they’re a great way to keep your finger on the pulse of the industry, and learn from the people at the very top.
