Did you know in 1956, Vince Cullers was the first Black man to own a marketing/ad agency? He was also one of the first to direct advertisements and marketing campaigns toward Black consumers instead of "creating a standard ad for white customers and simply using a Black model" as the article mentions. I just love everything about this ad! ✔️ 90s nostalgia... check! ✔️ Classic dance anthem... check! ✔️ Supporting Black-owned businesses... check, check! Not to mention Keke Palmer is a fierce working mother who definitely knows how to "keep a bag" (X/Twitter reference https://lnkd.in/g9naSyZQ) Bravo 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 As a small Black-owned business owner, I appreciate a corporate giant like Google providing a platform and cultural moment to spotlight black-owned businesses during a time of increased consumer spending - and not only during Black history month. For many small businesses, the increase in economic activity this time of year is crucial to our bottom line but it is often hard to break through all the noise and compete with the mega giants/brands who have bigger advertising budgets. I hope this holiday season you'll consider supporting a Black-owned business when shopping for self, family and friends 🎄✊🏾

Newsletters are the new black. In 2024, they're not just about engagement – they're about building a loyal community. This Creative Boom article hits the nail on the head. Starting a newsletter is one of the smartest moves for SMBs looking to dominate their market. From showcasing your work to directly reaching your audience, the benefits are crystal clear. But, it’s also crucial to avoid common pitfalls. ✅ Personalisation is key – your audience craves content that speaks directly to them. ✅ Consistency matters – regular updates keep your brand top of mind. ❌ Avoid being too salesy – newsletters should provide value first, promote second.

Once you open your eyes to the white faces that are everywhere in British and European advertising, it gets pretty shocking. And of course, that’s just the surface that we visibly see. This is a deeply considered article shared by Shereen (who is ALWAYS worth a follow). It’s for all of us, not just those who work in advertising, because, after all, we are the audience of all those ads. The questions at the end still have me thinking… ‘Is irony-based humor funny to everyone, equally? Or is it especially funny to most types of white people? Is minimalism as a design aesthetic appealing to everyone, equally? Or is it especially appealing to more types of white people? Is the version of Cardi B that we get in ads appealing to everyone, equally? Or is it especially appealing to a certain swath of white people? Is our shared conception of motherhood, friendship, luxury, adventure, determination, faith, fishing, young adulthood, or “great work” shared by everyone, equally? Or are those conceptions especially shared by white people? I can’t say for sure, but I’d love to find out what would happen if we asked the question.’

What we're losing in the blinding whiteness of advertising. "At that midway point in my career, I started to wonder more intensely (or perhaps more despairingly), how many of this [ad] industry’s standards are slanted toward the idiosyncrasies of the white community (toward the way white people “think, mentally, emotionally and physically”). I wondered how many of our creative choices were invisibly imprinted with their community’s shared inspiration, memories, tendencies, and circumstances. So I decided to push back however I could. Where a David Ogilvy quote might usually go, I put an Audre Lorde quote. In the audience personas, I’d swap the white mom named Elaine for a Black mom named Janine. Toni Morrison once observed, “In this country American means white. Everybody else has to hyphenate.” In so many different ways, I’ve seen this psychological pothole leave so many in our industry nose-blind to the way whiteness is fused into so many of our default terms and conceptions." This is a thoughtful and insightful article written by Donovan Triplett Strategy Director Wieden + Kennedy Examining our individual relationship to whiteness is a foundational core part of the process of dismantling systemic racism and internalised oppression. It makes for often uncomfortable reflections and takes bravery to go deeper. It's for that reason why so many skip this aspect of the work. It's not glamorous, would never feature on a corporate PowerPoint slide, yet is very necessary.
