𝐂𝐲𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐦 𝐏𝐚𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐀𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐰𝐬 Australian businesses will soon be required to disclose cyber ransom payments under a landmark cybersecurity law. This move aims to shed light on the dark practice of quietly paying off hackers, a situation exacerbated by major ransomware attacks on companies like MediSecure, Optus, and Latitude. Key Points: - New Legislation: The Cyber Security Act mandates businesses and government entities to disclose ransom payments or face fines, pushing for transparency to understand the scale of the problem. - Disclosure Requirement: Businesses with an annual turnover of more than $3 million must report these payments. Some industry groups argue the threshold should be higher, at $10 million, to avoid burdening small businesses. - No-Fault Scheme: The Limited Use Provision ensures that disclosed information is protected from regulatory scrutiny, except in narrow circumstances. - Support and Concerns: While there is support for the bill, concerns remain about potential impacts on small businesses and the possibility of identification and prosecution despite protections. #Don't Miss the VISS Summit Stay ahead in cybersecurity by attending the VISS Summit. 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐈 𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐳 Google DeepMind's AI systems have solved four out of six problems in this year's International Mathematical Olympiad, achieving results comparable to silver medalists in the competition for high school students. Why it matters: Solving complex math problems with step-by-step proofs is a significant challenge in machine learning, previously unattainable for AI systems. "These are extremely hard mathematical problems, and no AI system has ever achieved a high success rate in these types of problems," said Pushmeet Kohli, DeepMind's VP of research. How it works: - AlphaProof: Uses reinforcement learning to tackle problems without human intervention, building on DeepMind's past AI successes. - AlphaGeometry 2: Solved the competition's geometry problem in 19 seconds using synthetic training data. Overall, the AI systems scored 28 out of 42 points, earning silver-medal status and nearly reaching gold. What they're saying: Fields medalist Timothy Gowers praised the AI's clever solutions and noted the significant progress in AI's mathematical capabilities. #Don't Miss the VISS Summit! 𝐀𝐈 𝐓𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 An AI tool, Mia, has demonstrated its capability to detect signs of cancer overlooked by human radiologists. Piloted alongside NHS clinicians in the UK, Mia analyzed mammograms of over 10,000 women and successfully flagged all cases of breast cancer, including 11 that doctors missed. Trained on a dataset of over 6,000 previous breast cancer cases, Mia identified cancer with 81.6 percent accuracy and correctly ruled it out 72.9 percent of the time. This tool is now being further developed to predict patients' risks of side effects like lymphoedema after surgery and radiotherapy, enabling more personalized care. The research team plans to validate the AI's risk prediction model in a clinical trial called Pre-Act, involving 780 breast cancer patients over two years. #Don't Miss the Healthcare Summit! 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐊𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐲𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬 A North Korea-linked threat actor known for its cyber espionage operations has gradually expanded into financially-motivated attacks involving the deployment of ransomware. This shift sets the group apart from other nation-state hacking groups linked to the country. Google-owned Mandiant is tracking this activity cluster under the moniker APT45, which overlaps with names such as Andariel, Nickel Hyatt, Onyx Sleet, Stonefly, and Silent Chollima. "APT45 is a long-running, moderately sophisticated North Korean cyber operator that has carried out espionage campaigns as early as 2009," researchers Taylor Long, Jeff Johnson, Alice Revelli, Fred Plan, and Michael Barnhart said. "APT45 has been the most frequently observed targeting critical infrastructure." APT45, along with APT38 (aka BlueNoroff), APT43 (aka Kimsuky), and Lazarus Group (aka TEMP.Hermit), are elements within North Korea's Reconnaissance General Bureau (RGB), the nation's premier military intelligence organization. #Why You Should Join the VISS Conference Stay ahead of cybersecurity threats by attending the Vancouver International Security Summit (VISS). 𝐓𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐀𝐩𝐩 𝐅𝐥𝐚𝐰 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐕𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐨𝐬 A zero-day security flaw in Telegram's Android app, dubbed EvilVideo, allowed attackers to spread malicious files disguised as videos. Discovered by ESET and responsibly disclosed on June 26, the issue was patched by Telegram in version 10.14.5 released on July 11. The exploit, sold on an underground forum, used Telegram's API to upload malicious APKs camouflaged as 30-second videos. When users tried to play the video, they were prompted with a message that the video could not be played and to try an external player. Proceeding with this step led to a prompt to install the APK, named "xHamster Premium Mod," compromising the device. This incident underscores the importance of vigilance in cybersecurity, especially regarding popular apps and platforms. It highlights the ongoing challenge of keeping software secure and the necessity of timely updates and user awareness. #Why You Should Join the VISS Conference Stay ahead of cybersecurity threats by attending the @Vancouver International Security Summit (VISS).
