Passenger rail journeys per month (2008-2023). From 54-million passenger trips per month in February 2008 to 3.7-million in October 2023. The Covid effect is clear but the downward pattern was there long before the pandemic.

Swiss | Trains, Sustainable Infrastructure & Urbanisation | TEDx Speaker | 10+ Languages | Chinese Green Card (Beijing)
In 2013, when China's railways were being restructured, I penned a list of 100 suggestions. Today, over 2/3 of these are reality, partially or in full. In 2024, I gave them a new list of another 100 suggestions. They're being realised just months after being published. Of these, suggestions 22 and 23 refer to an overnight sleeper train to Hong Kong West Kowloon from Beijing or Shanghai. The railways are listening, and together, we are shaping the future of rail travel. The Swiss, as always, inspire the Chinese railways to do better.

As Hemmingway might have written in The Sun Also Rises: "How do you lose domestic travel options?" "Two ways. Gradually, then suddenly." As Consumer NZ states: “New Zealand also has the most concentrated domestic aviation market in the world, so we think it's valid for consumers to question whether the prices they're seeing are justified...In a heavily concentrated market, people have limited choice, and aren't able to "vote with their wallet" - which is healthy, consumer behaviour that puts pressure on businesses to compete on price, and ultimately plays a role in determining what that ‘fair’ price really is." The NZ government owns 51% of Air NZ...is this ownership serving the population, especially the domestic air travel population? What is the societal responsibility of the majority shareholder to ensure the domestic population can actually move around, especially between the islands- and between main and regional centres? Perhaps they feel there is no such responsibility- but at least be honest about that. But also don't try to say this is 'the market' at work... this is rather extremely close to a monopoly that lacks any sense of societal responsibility. Don't be fooled by the strategic communication of the inflight videos- this is extractive monopoly behaviour and ethos in action.
Air NZ justifies pricing for near-$2000 domestic airfares
