Making a job change is scary. Even with all the vetting & interviews, there's still an inherent leap of faith involved. It's no surprise that a job change ranks as one of the most stressful life events. So when things start getting real. I believe it makes sense to go meet in person to talk through the potential upcoming change. Driving an hour from my house to meet up with a candidate who is nearing the offer stage. Yeah, I could wait until they have it in writing, but the investment at that point seems skewed. I'm a huge fan of doing things that aren't scalable, it's one of the few advantages a small firm has. Besides, I'll get to go knock on some doors while I'm there. At the very least I might make some new friends.

I was interviewing someone recently who was really struggling... They hadn't properly prepared their presentation and were starting to panic. I stopped the questions and instinctively offered them a choice: 1️⃣ Soldier on and try and get through to the end 2️⃣ Come back in a few days and show how great they can really be (on the condition they really wanted it) They took the opportunity for a second chance. Plenty of people asked why I asked them if they wanted to come back - it doesn't seem logical; I'm busy, time is short, and organisations often have to make arbitrary choices to whittle down candidates. For me, though, it didn't feel right. I know how stressful it can be trying to get your first job, and I know how important second chances have been in my career. Instead I got an opportunity to see how someone bounces back from adversity, which is maybe even more important than seeing whether they can prepare for an interview. Especially in a startup. Was I wrong?

Job Seekers: Let’s talk about CLOSING. 1 wild hack in the comments. We all know it’s hard as **** out there right now if you’re looking for work. Even getting interviews is a grind, and, let’s face it, a crapshoot. In this market, if you’re getting past the early rounds, you want to make sure you can close - the opportunities are too precious to waste. One great way to do this is just to go way above and beyond. Not nice follow up email beyond. WAY beyond. Like, I built a website to show you why I’m the perfect candidate - specific to this role and company. This opportunity. Doesn’t have to be that. But WOW them. Make them have to choose you, move you to the next round. Whatever it takes. Your career is worth it.

How to find your ideal opportunity faster Stop applying for jobs you don’t really want. That fuels the belief that you may have to settle for it “if nothing else comes up” make space to see and create the opportunities you’re actually excited to add value to! Give time to those who give time to you. Don’t go chasing people who aren’t getting back to you. Making space for the people who reciprocate your commitment to getting the right person hired. Learn to ask the hard questions up front and and say no quickly. When a situation doesn’t align or isn’t a fit make space for the situation that does. Go into situations with a high intention, low attachment attitude. You can be both and it’s the most attractive thing to those who are around you. So true. We are tired of the runaround. One at the most two interviews. No tests or assessments are needed, that is too much. Put the salary in the job description. If its entry-level doesn't require many years of experience that is mid-level and above. Pay people their worth! Or they will move on to something better. Recruiters stop ghosting people and then you wonder why they don't trust you. I've had six recruiters reach out for the same job and send a resume but nothing back. Stop ghosting clients! One pet peeve and I've experienced it a few times if you post a job and go through interviewing people only to hire internally that's wrong! You wasted people's time, energy, money, and gas. Job Seekers are tired! They are frustrated! We are exhausted! We have bills piling up! We have families and daily needs also. She is telling the truth.

Between in person meetings, presentations, Zoom calls and 'just one more interview' before expecting an offer, he put on the brakes. Between the 4 of them, he'd been interviewed 16 times. After learning that 2 of the companies planned additional interviews, he bowed out of both. He went back to the other 2 and said, "make an offer or I am out." He got 2 offers, accepted the one he wanted and is starting his new job on December 1st. At some point you just hit a wall. Want people to make a damn decision already. Hiring has never been this long, this difficult or this flaky. He said the best part of the entire experience was finding his voice and taking back some control over his own life. Well done. #jobsearch #confidence #resumewriting

Employers should be holding themselves to a higher standard than this, and soon many people will choose to avoid applying to your company at all if you keep making these mistakes. Stop wasting people's time that actually want to work.

Their response to why they left is ‘I was unhappy’ 😞 Here are 3 questions to ask yourself before you start job searching: 1. Why do I want to leave my current job? Understanding the root cause of why you are unhappy with your current situation will help you make better choices to avoid being in the same situation again in a few months. 2. What do I want in my next job? You don’t need to have the entire big picture but what small details can you outline to determine your non-negotiables. You need to know this before you start interviewing, so that you are not distracted from your why. What advice would you give this person?
