“ITL also varied among medical specialties (Figure 1; eTable 4 in Supplement 1). Anesthesiology reported the highest rate of ITL at 46.8% (95% CI, 42.5%-51.0%).” Intention to leave (ITL) for anesthesiologists creates more demand for qualified nonphysician anesthesia providers (CME terminology; American English for anesthetist -ah-nes-ta-tist) of CAA and CRNA to fill the gap. Not to be confused with with the rest of the world for consultant anaesthetist -ah-neest-ta-tist (physician). Unfortunately for patients, that opens the door for divergence from medical direction and physician-led anesthesia care team. It may also impact the ability of training programs to meet the CME teaching physician ratio of 1:2, which would limit training of anesthesiology residents. To the academic practice leaders: the importance of great culture should not be ingnored and cannot be underestimated. People follow great leaders and thrive in great culture. This is the foundation of wellbeing at work. To the anesthesiologist and anesthetist academicians: find your people and live your best life - professionally, socially, and personally. Follow the leader you aspire to be.

ICYMI, this week, a study found that women are less likely to die when treated by female doctors. It’s not the first study with similar results, and it likely won’t be the last. One of the reasons cited is that medical students get limited training in women’s health issues. That is definitely true. Equally as important, however, is that there are variations in how men and women physicians treat women. Women’s pain and symptoms are often dismissed, or deemed less severe, emotional or psychological in origin. Megan Ranney has shared that women physicians may be more aware of that and more empathetic. According to Ashish Jha, the differences exist because women physicians “tend to be better at communication, listening to patients, and speaking openly.” As a result their patients are less likely to experience miscommunication, misunderstanding, and bias. There is nuance here, so please learn more before taking these as firm conclusions or switching doctors. For far too long, women have been treated as a subset of healthcare, taking a backseat to male physiology in every aspect from medical training, clinical trials, disease research and diagnosis to pain management and therapeutic development. Yet 51% of the United States population is female! No one’s health is one-size-fits-all, especially women’s health. There are many conditions that pertain primarily to women. But even general health issues that affect both genders, like cardiovascular disease, are characterized by gender-based bias in care. This new study is yet another wakeup call to women to take control of their health, educate themselves about their body, especially how heart attack symptoms are unique to women. Dr. Linda Lawrence and Dr. Andrea Austin founded Revitalize Women Physician Circle to increase women physician fulfillment in their careers. As two emergency physicians, they recognized what this article showed: a little more than half of women emergency physicians would recommend their specialty again, and even in the specialties with the highest satisfaction, there is still a lot that wouldn't go into medicine or surgery again. The Revitalize mission is focused on increasing respect, work-life harmony, and authenticity in medicine to transform the culture to support the thriving of all doctors. While there are a lot of women physician groups out there, there is no group like Revitalize that connects women physician and surgeons around the globe, across specialties, phases of career, and interest groups. "Medical research has shortchanged women for decades. This is particularly true of older women, leaving physicians without critically important information about how to best manage their health." The Washington Post spoke to physicians and medical researchers about what efforts to address this gap, like the White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research, should prioritize. One cross-cutting priority starts with data and reporting. Clinical trial data need to be (1) collected from sources representative of the diverse population affected, and (2) analyzed and reported by different demographic factors, to give insight into how effective treatments are for different segments of the population. #healthequity #healthanalytics #techequity

As a female physician, I can attest to some of these insights, particularly in terms of #patientengagement, #communication, and #empathy. According to Yusuke Tsugawa, MD, the study’s senior author, “What our findings indicate is that female and male physicians practice medicine differently, and these differences have a meaningful impact on patients' health outcomes,” “Further research on the underlying mechanisms linking physician gender with patient outcomes, and why the benefit of receiving the treatment from female physicians is larger for female patients, has the potential to improve patient outcomes across the board.” Potential reasons for the difference in outcomes could be that male physicians are more likely to discount the symptoms of their female patients. Meanwhile, female physicians may be more likely to have open communication and patient engagement strategies, which benefit patients of all genders, particularly women. https://lnkd.in/gaAi6ArA
