R&D and the value of errors. Technical Department and R&D are often confused with each other (at least in my line of business), under the assumption that they are somehow equivalent. They are not. A Technical Department has to do with project administration, doing its best to handle tasks it is already familiar with. The R&D Department is concerned with innovation, striving to tackle the unknown. It must be able (and allowed) to make mistakes on behalf of everyone in the company until something good comes up. For R&D people “Fehler sind Helfer, nur anders buchstabiert” (“errors are helpers, just spelled differently” ) as my German friends say. Do you happen to do both? Well, just remember to switch hats.

💡 Everything is designed.💡 It was in an undergraduate Product Design class at MIT Leaders for Global Operations (LGO) when the professor said this to all of us. He said, "Think about it. The chair you're sitting on, the projector I'm using, the building we're in, even this entire campus. Everything has been designed. It's up to YOU to design it well." This was a huge A-HA moment for me. Of course that made sense - physical things don't just spring out of nowhere into coherent existence. But PROCESSES also are designed. Over my 4 decades of experience with the craft, I have seen many organizations have programs fail because they stressed non-critical aspects in favor of the "cult of personality", e.g. ego's, pet projects, and other poorly though out ideas. Critical misses because of a faux perception of how program management is run are more common than realized. The "Professional Program Management" schools tend to use superficial criteria over substance. Sure, schedule, often green lit, budgets of sorts, and other needs may be followed but what is missing is a hard-core challenge of the work. Current program management methods don't even include real design review or challenge tasks, though they wrongly believe they do. This lack of actual critical issue management results in many of the poor quality or outright failures. Recent Airplane Door Plug issues, SW failures, major EV manufacturers struggle with quality, The commercial submersible failure, et al, are all examples of this failure to challenge. While I am sure many think they are, I am happy to sit across the table and challenge back that they have little clue to the actual processes and thinking happening in their orgs.
