Today (day 3 of CE week), I worked from home on a grant proposal while the charging station of our electric car was installed. Even though I would position solar panels and ev's as 'only' horizon 2 in Bill Sharpe's 3 horizon model, it’s the best I can do at the moment to contribute to a circular economy. I worry about the extraction of resources and how we’re going to recycle all those solar panels and electric vehicles in 20 years from now. And I dream about a future where I can generate electricity from the plants in my garden like Plant-e does and don’t need a car anymore at all as the car sharing system in my city is well-developed (which is not yet the case). That's a horizon 3 world I hope to one day I live in. Anyhow, for now a pragmatic approach is needed so when our old dented Renault didn’t pass its annual checkup two weeks ago, we had to decide quickly. Because even though I always take the train to the university and the rest of the family cycles to school and work, we do need a car in this phase of our lives. A secondhand Nissan Leaf is now drawing us into an entirely new driving experience which is smooth and enervating at the same time since we need to adjust to a different rhythm of charging and driving. Tomorrow, I need to drive to the annual conference on circular economy on the other side of the country with a bunch of prototypes I can’t carry in the train. The real example is Electric cars which driving a shift towards cleaner, greener, and more sustainable transportation systems. However, while progress has been made towards the adoption of EVs, there are still challenges and barriers that need to be addressed.

In this week’s issue of Philippine Daily Inquirer, I explored the role of Electric Vehicles in the future of a sustainable automotive industry.
