In the heart of America’s rich food culture lies an unsung hero: food packaging. Consider the humble egg for example, which is an integral part of the American breakfast table with the average American consuming 278 eggs annually. The forecasted demand for egg packaging is set to skyrocket intensifying the need for sustainable packaging alternatives. As of today, twelve states have already enacted legislation aimed at banning expanded polystyrene packaging. Nice work and innovation of how companies like PepsiCo, The HEINEKEN Company, and Nestlé are pioneering a significant shift towards #sustainability by adopting green fertilizers. Ahead of new regulations requiring disclosure of greenhouse emissions in supply chains( #scope3 ), these corporations are partnering with innovative start-ups to tackle one of the major emission sources: fertilizers. Emissions Challenge: Traditional fertilizers contribute notably to CO₂ emissions. Nitrogen-based fertilizers and farm manure alone account for 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Green Solutions: Start-ups like Atlas Agro and CCM Technologies are at the forefront, offering technologies that significantly reduce emissions. CCm, for example, combines captured #CO₂ with organic materials to create more sustainable crop nutrients. Industry Impact: These green fertilizers are not just environmentally beneficial but also align with upcoming regulatory changes in the #EU and #US. By January, companies in the EU must report their entire supply chain carbon footprint. Collaborative Efforts: Large corporations are not just switching to green fertilizers but also investing in these start-ups, understanding the urgency and potential of this shift. Challenges and Opportunities: The cost remains a hurdle due to limited production scales. However, the industry sees potential in government support and collaborative initiatives to bridge the price gap and increase production. Great to see these sustainable practices gain momentum, the food and beverage industry is poised for a transformative shift towards a greener future. #Sustainability #GreenInnovation #SupplyChain #Agriculture #food
Great article (paywall) on how Nestlé and other companies like The HEINEKEN Company and PepsiCo are exploring the development and deployment of low-carbon #fertilizers - a critical component of #decarbonizing food production and reaching #netzero. Shout out to Matthew Ryan and team at Nestlé UK&I quoted extensively in this article - as he says: "We’re the world’s biggest food and beverage company and so if we’re not taking a leading position on this then what hope do the rest have?" #wearenestlé #regenerativeagriculture #climatechange

The purpose of coating the inner walls of food containers with PP (Polypropylene), PE (Polyethylene), or PLA (Polylactic Acid) films is to provide additional barrier properties and enhance the performance of the container in terms of food preservation and presentation. Here are the specific uses of these films: PP (Polypropylene) Coating: PP is a commonly used thermoplastic polymer known for its excellent barrier properties against moisture, oils, and gases. Coating the inner walls of food containers with PP helps prevent liquids, such as sauces or soups, from seeping through the paper and causing leakage. It also protects the food from moisture, ensuring that the container remains sturdy and intact. PE (Polyethylene) Coating: PE is another widely used thermoplastic polymer with good moisture resistance. Coating the inner walls of food containers with PE provides an additional layer of protection against moisture and grease, making it suitable for holding greasy or moist food items like fried foods or salads. PLA (Polylactic Acid) Coating: PLA is a biodegradable and compostable bioplastic derived from renewable resources like corn starch or sugarcane. Coating the inner walls of food containers with PLA offers similar barrier properties to PP and PE while being more environmentally friendly. PLA-coated containers are increasingly popular as consumers and businesses prioritize sustainability and eco-friendly packaging solutions. By using these films as coatings on the inner walls of food containers, manufacturers can improve the containers' resistance to moisture, oils, and other contaminants. This, in turn, helps maintain the freshness and quality of the food inside, provides a more pleasant eating experience for consumers, and reduces the risk of leaks or spills during transportation and use. Additionally, these coatings contribute to the overall safety and convenience of food packaging.
