Sustainability is a hot topic for large and small breweries - as we heard from this morning's talks at European Brewers Conference in Lille, France 🌍🍺 Here are some key takeaways:   ✔ Energy optimization: a very promising wort boiling system technology showcased by GEA (Qboil) reaching an evaporation rate of less than 0.5% and a capacity to increase brews per day to 24. The outcome is a decrease in heating and boiling energy consumption by 60% compared to traditional methods.   ✔ Water optimization & reuse: Waterleau presented a CAPEX-free solution for waste water and water treatment, enabling brewers to achieve an impressive 1.8 hl/hl without hefty investments. This 'Water as a service' concept is set to transform the approach of water management in the industry.   ✔ Heat pumps in breweries: Our very own Jacob Friis shared compelling insights on heat pumps in both brownfield and greenfield breweries. His findings highlighted both the challenges and advantages, essential for anyone considering this sustainable solution.   ✔ One powerful takeaway: "If you cannot measure, you cannot control." They represent around 15% of the overall beer volumes in Europe. With a lifespan of over 30 years, these large containers can be collected and reused over 150 times before being recycled for further use."
