To prevent catastrophic climate change we have to switch quickly to electric vehicles and appliances fueled by renewable energy. But it shouldn’t come at the expense of good-paying jobs — and it doesn’t have to. Now that the electrification revolution is solidly underway — with electric car sales surging and electric heat pumps outselling gas furnaces — bad-faith actors are trying to exploit workers’ anxieties about their role in a zero-emission future. That effort has been on display most recently in the autoworkers’ strike against the Big Three carmakers. ... It took only a few days for the United Auto Workers to expose that lie with its Oct. 6 announcement that General Motors committed to put its battery manufacturing operations under the union’s national agreement. “We’ve been told the EV future must be a race to the bottom, and now we’ve called their bluff,” UAW President Shawn Fain said. Workers have legitimate reasons to worry that as automakers shift to EVs they will shut down internal combustion engine and transmission plants and replace them with low-wage battery factory jobs. But the agreement with GM shows that is a choice, and that tackling climate change by shifting to a zero-emission economy does not have to mean leaving workers behind. ... Some workers may fear that vehicle electrification will leave them behind. But there is no evidence that it will cause a broad swath of blue-collar jobs to disappear or become “lower paid, less skilled or less desirable,” said Sanya Carley, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania who has studied autoworkers in the Midwest and Appalachian coal mining communities. “It’s a false dichotomy to say that we need to pursue decarbonization or equity. We can do both at the same time.” ... Fortunately, President Biden understands that the energy transition does not have to come at the expense of good-paying, middle-class jobs. Many of the Inflation Reduction Act’s tax incentives for clean energy projects are tied to higher labor standards. Biden has joined autoworkers on the picket line and wants more union-led training and apprenticeship programs to make sure that workers displaced by the shift are first in line for electric vehicle and battery manufacturing jobs. “We’re going to leave nobody behind,” Biden said last month in Detroit. Biden and other leaders have a lot of work ahead to deliver on that promise, but it’s right to demand that good-paying jobs are a nonnegotiable part of our zero-emission future."

General Motors, Ford Motor Company, and Stellantis North America are making strategic adjustments in response to rising costs and changing market demands. General Motors (GM) has decided to postpone re-tooling its Orion assembly plant for electric Chevy Silverado pickup trucks until 2025. This one-year delay, which was prompted by the need to assess the full cost of a UAW settlement and gauge the demand for high-priced electric pickups, will allow GM to make informed decisions and allocate resources effectively. With $4 billion earmarked for the overhaul, GM is taking a prudent approach to ensure a successful transition. Following suit, Ford recently announced the shutdown of one production shift at its factory producing electric F-150 Lightning pickups. This move reflects Ford's proactive response to the evolving market dynamics and the need to align production capacity with demand. Ford aims to maintain its competitive edge in the electric truck segment by optimizing operations. Stellantis, too, is taking steps to address cash flow concerns. The company has canceled its planned exhibit at the upcoming CES technology show in Las Vegas. This decision is part of a broader cost-cutting strategy by CEO Carlos Tavares. Stellantis is proactively managing its resources, especially in light of potential "Stand Up Strikes" by the UAW, which could impact the production of Jeep or Ram trucks. While these cost concerns have primarily affected Detroit, it's worth noting that Volkswagen also strives to reduce operating costs by 10 billion euros. However, reports suggest that this effort is currently behind schedule. German suppliers to the automotive industry, which have traditionally focused on producing parts for fossil fuel-powered vehicles, are facing challenges as the auto sector transitions to electric mobility. Germany is home to a vast number of automotive suppliers, ranging from large companies like ZF and Continental to smaller firms making components such as spark plugs, heaters, and exhaust systems. A recent study by consultancy Strategy& found that German suppliers have lost nearly three percentage points of global market share since 2019, and the transition to electric vehicles is putting their profitability at risk. However, some larger companies are better positioned to adapt to the changing landscape, while smaller firms face greater challenges. For example, Eberspaecher, a company specializing in exhaust systems and heaters, has been working to pivot toward manufacturing components for electric vehicles. When equipment survives two industrial revolutions! I am often reminded that industrial equipment has many life cycles. It is not uncommon to have industrial equipment and buildings that have lasted 100 years. I have seen grain elevators with electrical motors from the 1890s. We have to keep this in mind when we build automation and information architectures. We need great interfaces and abstraction layers that allows us to evolve.
