Charity, though well-meaning, can be very toxic. We've repeatedly seen videos of children especially in Africa with flies flying all over their faces, being used to attract donors. The dignity of those children get eroded right before our eyes, and over time they start being viewed as charity cases. In western countries, children's faces are blurred to protect the identity of minors. Are those other ones any different? I then ask these questions: 📍What proportion of those donations reach the children or their families? 📍How long can such donations be sustainable? Humans are driven by compassion, thus their being led to give. But we should remember that lots of activities/donations don't equal impact. Not involving the recipients come up with their own solutions, kills initiative and accountability on their part. Ever wondered why the situation of the recipients remains relatively unchanged once the donors exit the stage? DEPENDENCY. Dependency has a way of taking power away from people, in the very things they had the capacity to do for themselves.

Found myself feeling saddened and helpless with world events and the deaths and extreme trauma to so many innocent lives. To combat this feeling of helplessness, I donated blood.
