Nothing beats strong teamwork

This week Saylor celebrated our 3rd birthday 🤯 I am so proud of the crew and all we've achieved. Below is my little welcome message to the team at our annual offsite where we painted, solved a murder/mystery, and ate a deliciously chaotic Hibachi din. Thought I'd share... - Welcome to Saylor’s 3 year old birthday party!! As many of you know... I have a 6 month old. She is incredibly cute and is growing and changing dramatically on a weekly basis. When she was born she could barely open her eyes and poop. She was navigating the world for the first time. 6 months later - she’s alert, joyful, pooping a lot… but struggles too. She’s learning how to sit up, eat solids, and sleep through the night. Now that’s a 6 month old. When I picture her at three years old… she’ll be walking and talking, learning how to put on her own shoes, asking questions about the World, and learning how to play with other kids. 6 months after founding Saylor - we hired our first employee. Today... Saylor turns three and we are a team of 41. Now we’re a bit more mature than a three year old child, but it's important to remember how much more we have to learn. After three years we’re still doing things for the first time, we’re asking questions about our place in the world, and we’re learning how to work together better. This is such a critical time for us as a company. We have momentum with our clients & partners, an incredible team, and a clear strategy. We’re just three years old. Imagine when we turn 5 or 10 or 20. We have such an exciting life ahead of us and I can’t wait to get old together.

This month my wife and I are celebrating our 6 year wedding anniversary. We’ve had some great years filled with love, fun and surprises, can’t wait to see what’s next. As it often happens, our relationships teach us about ourselves and what’s important. Here are 6 lessons after 6 years that have become invaluable personally and professionally. 1. Work is love manifested. So work for those you say you love.  2. Be patient. People are with you more than you know. 3. It’s ok to be vulnerable. That’s the only way people can really help you. 4. Approach every interaction to understand and not to respond. 5. Do less explaining and more apologizing.  6. Don’t take withdrawals without depositing. Give without expecting, and when you need something, it will be there for you. These lessons have been instrumental in my personal growth and in enhancing the values that matter most to me. A Valentines day treat for the Applicants!!! In this matter the court had to consider whether the Respondent had complied with an arbitration award or not. This application was brought by the Applicants who had been employed part-time by the Respondent as cooks, and the Respondent would call the Applicants to work once an activity requiring their services occurs in the workplace. The Applicants received R 100 per day for their services and worked for 5 days on average in a month. The Applicants were dismissed from their posts and new employees were appointed to their positions. The Applicants reffered an unfair dismissal dispute to the CCMA and the commissioner found that their dismissal was procedurally and substantively unfair and ordered the Respondent to reinstate the Applicants to their positions on the same terms and conditions before their dismissal. The Labour Court is granted powers under section 158(1)(c)of the Labour Relations Act to make an arbitration award an order of court. The court accordingly made the CCMA arbitration award an order of court. The court in reaching this decision reasoned as follows: "The ordinary meaning of the word "reinstate" is to put the employee in the same job or position he or she occupied before their dismissal. Reinstatement is aimed at placing an employee in the position he/she would have occupied but for the unfair dismissal". The Respondent in this matter had reinstated the Applicants and did not use their services for a period of 3 months meaning they were not renumerated throughout this time. The Respondent failed to comply with the arbitration award as it no longer called the Applicants to come and offer their services as and when they were required which was the position before their dismissal. In consideration of this the court made the arbitration award an order of court and ordered cost in favour of the Applicants. Chocolates and flowers for the Applicants 😊
