Animal awareness and empathy are essential for the collective growth of any society. It's unfortunate that contemporary India lacks animal empathy, even though ancient India had a beautiful system that associated one animal with one God, and animals were part of our cultural rituals. It's high time we rekindle that empathy towards animals. As we strive to create a more compassionate society, it's disheartening to see instances of animal cruelty. While our cops and IPL organizers are busy kicking a stray dog who mistakenly entered the cricket ground, Istanbul airport brought in therapy dogs to calm stressed travelers! Let's take a moment to reflect on our actions and make a conscious effort to treat animals with the respect they deserve. We can start small by being mindful of our actions and taking steps to ensure the safety and well-being of animals around us. In a recent cricket match on March 24, 2024, between the Mumbai Indians and the Gujarat Titans, an unexpected visitor made an appearance on the field - a dog. Unfortunately, the treatment the dog received was far from ideal, highlighting a concerning issue. In Hinduism, dogs hold significant symbolic value, being associated with various gods such as Bhairava, Muthappan, Khandoba, Mallanna, Revanta, Yama, Yami, and Sarama. These associations reflect the reverence and respect accorded to dogs in Indian culture. Interestingly, one of the teams involved had recently undertaken efforts to promote animal welfare through their animal zoo and shelter. However, questions arise whether such initiatives are merely for optics or stem from genuine empathy towards animals. Contrasting this incident, a heartwarming video surfaced from a Chilean football field, where a similar canine visitor was treated with kindness and care. Security personnel and a player were seen gently removing the dog from the field, showcasing a stark difference in treatment. These incidents prompt reflection on our treatment of animals. While some instances demonstrate compassion and understanding, others reveal a distressing reality of mistreatment and neglect. It's a reminder that all creatures, regardless of their ability to communicate, deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. Violent acts against animals and traditional customs have long been at odds with each other, particularly in countries like India, where cultural legacy and modern ethics sometimes conflict. One of the most heated controversies in recent years has centred on Jallikattu, an ancestral bull-taming sport popular in Tamil Nadu. Working camels are often abused and overworked, even at tourist destinations. Thankfully, organizations like the India Animal Foundation (IAF) and Help In Suffering (HIS) are rescuing these camels. Our NGO partners provide them with the medical attention, proper rest and access to food and water they need. Each year, HIS treats close to 7,000 camels, and many even find lifelong homes.
