Our theme this month is the act of transformation – like when a seed transforms into a flower. A seed is nourished and nurtured with tender care – this means it will eventually transform into a flower. Survivors use their lived experiences to change the future – this means your story transforms into your strength. Systems are well overdue for an overhaul – this means voices need to be heard to transform arenas like the justice system into something actually beneficial for survivors and abusers alike. This month, we’ll explore the act of transformation: what’s needed for it, how we can support others through it, and everything in between!

What P*lestini*n writer, Ahmed Moor, taught me in a recent podcast is the need to 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 for P*lestini*ns. 𝐴𝑠 𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑎𝑑𝑣𝑜𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑝𝑒𝑎𝑐𝑒. Peace is the 𝑜𝑢𝑡𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒, the end state, he asserts. And to get there, we need to 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞. I found this insightful and helpful as someone who has "played it safe" and avoided controversy and attack by focusing on the word "peace". After all, most people wouldn't argue against the 𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑒𝑎𝑐𝑒. In contrast, many might argue against justice for P*lestini*ns. Yet it's true. Justice for P*lestin*ans is what is needed to achieve lasting peace. Justice means a permanent end to the decades long cycle of violence. Justice means ending the occupation. Justice means ending the apartheid state. Justice means equal rights. Justice means human rights. Justice means freedom, dignity, safety, and security for all, Izraylis and P*lestini*ans alike. #justice #equalrights #humanrights #gazacrisis #freepalestine

Some key takeaways from this morning's forum on Race & Justice Reframed: Crafting A New Narrative For Public Safety, Criminal Justice, and Police Reform - * The current policing and criminal justice system that we have works perfectly in the way that it was intended: meaning the disproportionate incarceration and subjugation of Black and Brown people. * We need to : Reform Dismantle Recreate and Re-experience self-determination - not as felons, but as people with capabilities, talent, goodness, and intelligence. * If you do work around anti-recidivism, expungement, restorative justice, etc. - HIRE someone with a conviction - better yet, PUT THEM ON YOUR BOARD. * Memes are not research. We need good and strong data. Let's talk about and report on deaths in custody. * The only way you don't get killed by police is through the absence of police - especially in situations regarding housing insecurity, mental health, and addiction.
