One of my biggest fears in becoming a mentor was the thought, "Do I need to know it all?" But I realized a better approach is to set an example by being unafraid to admit ignorance. There are times I just throw up my hands and say, "I have absolutely no idea about that field, you need to talk to someone else because I'm the wrong person." This honesty is crucial. Pretending to know everything can lead to a dysfunctional team where members talk about things they don’t understand. That's a path to a downward spiral. But when we openly admit what we don't know: - If it’s an investment in an area I don’t understand, I straightforwardly say so and move on, avoiding getting into things I don't comprehend. - If it's a problem we're trying to solve and I lack understanding, it becomes an opportunity to seek expertise from those who do, setting us on a path of learning, growth, and development. So, don't be annoyed. Instead, be transparent about what you know and don’t know. If you lack knowledge in an area but need to understand it, seek out those who do, and do so gratefully.
