New biosensor will give robots super sense of smell An international team of scientists has created a biosensor that will help robots gain a human sense of smell. The next generation of high-precision biological sensors will be used by machines to assess the quality of food and the amount of pollutants in the atmosphere. It has not been easy to give machines the ability to distinguish odors that are mirror images of each other. This prevented the creation of machines with a sense of smell similar to or superior to that of humans, the researchers say. The development is the merit of scientists from the universities of Manchester \(UK\) and Bari \(Italy\). The new biosensor is based on an odorant-binding protein. Such proteins are located in the mucus of the nasal cavity and contribute to increased sensitivity of the olfactory nerves. When an odorous substance comes into contact with the olfactory receptors, a sensation of smell occurs. The research team found a way to produce such proteins in quantities that would allow them to be used in biosensors. They used transistors with flavored proteins. With their help, unique current changes were measured and recorded during the reaction of proteins to odorants. As a result, the machine senses the smell and then transmits a message, which is subsequently decoded. Scientists talk about the ultra-high sensitivity of the system. According to them, the electronic nose has a sensitivity limit close to the human nose. We have created a new sensitive platform that allows us to develop more advanced sensors that can find wide application in industry, the scientists said. AI simulations have the potential to mimic biological systems with uncanny precision, replicating cell, tissue, and organ behavior. However, they still can't replace the real thing. Datasets containing clinical, genetic, neurological, and biochemical information from animals and humans, when analyzed by AI, hold immense potential for transformative discoveries. Yet, they are incomplete and likely to pose ethical challenges that must be addressed. The complexity of living organisms remains a significant hurdle for modern computing power. In the near future, AI is expected to enhance and refine animal research rather than replace it. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence makes predicting its full impact on biosciences and animal use challenging. For now, animal models will remain crucial for medical discoveries. Marine-based scientific elements are still poorly understood but have the potential to produce unique and useful compounds for drug development. There are stark differences between land-based organisms and marine-based organisms, which have evolved for much longer and, therefore, offer more diverse and complex chemistry.
