“It was the happiest day of my life!” In honor of Disability Pride Month, we're celebrating Kirk’s inspiring story. Every year in July, Disability Pride Month celebrates persons who experience disability, their identities and culture, and their positive contributions to society. Kirk, diagnosed with Huntington’s disease and facing homelessness, found hope and support through RHD’s Street2Feet. Thanks to a generous donation, Kirk received a motorized wheelchair, granting him newfound independence. We’ll be highlighting stories like Kirk’s all month long. Everyone should watch this powerful 3 min video from Scope about the social model of disability, to rethink 'disability'. The model says that people are disabled by barriers in society, not by their impairment or difference. Barriers can be physical, like buildings not having accessible toilets. Or they can be caused by people's attitudes to difference, like assuming disabled people can't do certain things. Removing these barriers creates equality and offers disabled people more independence, choice and control.
At our recent event, Megan Belcher shared some information on using the Social Model of Disability in place of the Medical Model. The article here from charity Scope explains how the social model works and why more of us should be moving to use this model: https://lnkd.in/eFnrehU #accessibility #disabilityrights #independentliving #societyandculture #socialissues #diversityandinclusion #bristol #womeninbusiness

UNVEILING THE UPDATED DISABILITY REPORTING HANDBOOK Some of us at Media Diversity Australia and Griffith University's Inclusive Futures: Reimagining Disability have been working on this new version of the Disability Reporting Handbook since last year (version 1 took +3 years) and I'm thrilled that it has just been uploaded to the Media Diversity Australia website! Here are some of the changes that you can expect to see... A few edits were fairly minor tweaks and reflected changes in our community. For example, Disability Discrimination Commissioner at the Australian Human Rights Commission, Dr Ben Gauntlett, wrote the incredible Foreword. However, he is no longer working in this position. Statistical data was updated when more recent information was available on government websites. A new section was also added about The Disability Royal Commission - what it is and report findings about media. A new chapter was added that looks specifically at how best to include disability in advertising, marketing or other types of media. Awesome organisations like Unstereotype Alliance, Bus Stop Films, Shift 20 Initiative #ZebedeeTalent all get a mention too. So much has changed since the original version, but so many basic principles have stayed the same. Just like last time, this has all been done in collaboration with members of the disability community, working media professionals and Griffith University academics. The same 'rules' still apply when creating inclusive content - whether that's a news story, advertisement, feature film or something else... #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs - media professionals should try to amplify disability voices where possible, especially if the story is about disability (or even if it's not). Let's keep working together to create media that best reflects the society it serves! Thank you to our amazing team behind the handbook: Lisa Cox, Joe-Anne Kek-Pamenter, Prof. Elizabeth Kendall AM, Dr Faith Valencia-Forrester, Briana Blackett, Antoinette Lattouf, Jessica Johnson, Pip Miller, Rachel Worsley and Dr Dinesh Palipana OAM #InclusiveFutures #ReimaginingDisability #GriffithUniversity #Disability #Reporting #Media #Journalist #Communication #Advertising #InclusionMatters

There's another Independence Day that we celebrate: July 26th. Thirty-four years ago, a second Independence Day was established on July 26. National Disability Independence Day celebrates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which expands the rights and prohibits discrimination of the disabled community. Even with the passing of the ADA, many people with disabilities still experience tremendous barriers to employment. Enter Goodwill. At Goodwill of Greater Washington, more than 250 team members have a disability. They are provided competitive wages, access to health and retirement benefits, a Caring Fund to address emergency needs, as well as RISE Coaches to help them navigate resources and systems to remove barriers to achieving success at work and beyond! In honor of National Disability Independence Day, please support Goodwill’s life-changing programs by making a one-time or recurring donation. This will give more neighbors with disabilities the freedom and independence to improve their lives. To kick off Learning Disability Week 2024, Sam Michael Wood and I made a short video for Friends 2 Friends, a local charity in Lichfield and Burton in Staffordshire that supports people with learning disabilities. This year's theme, "Do you see me?" focuses on being seen, heard, and valued. We spoke with the members to learn more about what this means to them. Please share this video to help spread awareness 🎥🎬 #LearningDisabilityWeek #learningdisabilities #learningdisability #learningdisabilityawareness #learningdisabilitiesawareness

Giving Tuesday is still underway! You can support our "Access Employment" campaign that will help us build the reserves we need to support our team and empower more job-seekers with disabilities, regardless of grant restrictions and unexpected setbacks like funding cuts and disasters. Our jobs are how we support ourselves, how we meet our friends, and sometimes even how we define ourselves. We are working towards a future where people with disabilities have equitable access to employment. You can help us get there. You can make your tax-deductible donation to support our work here: https://lnkd.in/dbzp4en8 If you donate to our Access Employment year-end campaign: * $50 can support 1 hour of individual advocacy services for a person with a disability who needs help getting training or equipment for a new line of work. * $100 can support a training to community members on their rights and how they can request reasonable accommodations at work. * $200 can support 4 hours of legal representation for someone who has been terminated from their job because of disability discrimination. * $400 can support a trip to the legislature to educate policy makers on how their decisions are impacting job-seekers with disabilities. Thank you for supporting the disability community. #GivingTuesday2023
