On this fourth International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, we celebrate the successes of our movement over the past year. 💪 250 UFA members 🎖 483 products and ingredients Upcycled Certified 🏪 92 companies producing and selling Upcycled Certified products and ingredients 🥑 Over a billion pounds of food diverted from waste streams since 2021 Our successes don't stop there. We also held the first-ever Upcycled Innovation Challenge with Misfits Market, the first-ever Upcycled Food Pavilion at Specialty Food Association Summer Fancy Food Show and the first-ever Upcycled Alley at New Hope Network Natural Products Expo East. Last week we saw the introduction of the NO TIME TO Waste Act, a bipartisan, bicameral bill that would reduce food loss and waste in the United States, and which uses the UFA definition of "upcycled foods!" It's amazing to see the progress we've made, but we know there's still work to do. As a collective we're behind on our global goals to halve food loss and waste by 2030. We need more policy efforts and resources dedicated to food loss and waste, more retailers selling upcycled certified products, and more education for consumers on how they can make a difference. Hey, it’s National Upcycling Day! Have you ever wondered where upcycled foods come from? The truth is there is a LOT of waste in the food manufacturing process regardless of the food category. All this wasted food presents an opportunity to create exciting new foods. Some upcycled food items are more obvious than others (like using misshapen produced to make a jam), and there are innovative companies that are even finding ways to turn food byproducts that were previously thought to be inedible, into delicious, nutritious new products!
