University of Florida (UF) Health researchers have secured a $2.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop an AI-based clinical decision support system focused on enhancing kidney transplant outcomes. Over a five-year span, the team aims to leverage AI models for diagnosis, prediction, and care management in the context of kidney transplants.  One tool in development will utilize patient data and kidney tissue sample analysis to predict transplant outcomes, potentially addressing organ scarcity and rejection issues. This AI system has the potential to streamline data analysis, allowing clinicians to focus on critical aspects of patient care.  The study's results will help determine whether AI can improve future kidney function prediction compared to existing clinical methods. Most of the leading use cases for #GenAI in medicine involve administrative tasks, note transcription, and EHR assistance. It's a practical start for a technology that has not yet crossed the trust and capability threshold for the majority of patients and clinicians. But if that is as far as we're willing to go with AI—if we believe the boundaries have already been stretched to their limits—then I am certain clinician burnout will remain a major U.S. crisis for the foreseeable future. If, instead, doctors and nurses choose to harness its full capacity and eagerly test its limits, then GenAI has a near-limitless potential to alleviate burnout and rekindle the doctor-patient relationship. This will happen if we commit to training future generations of AI to: (a) empower patients with expertise, (b) assist with clinical decisions that reduce misdiagnoses and medical errors, and (c) tackle medicine's greatest threat—chronic disease. I'm eager to share specifics about AI's potential at the upcoming Ending Clinician Burnout Global Community Summit on August 14, hosted by Jonathan Fisher, MD, FACC and Kelcey T., M.Ed.
