"...remote is the opposite of 'local', not 'synchronous'.."
If we are up to something important we are going to need a dedicated, cross-functional Team.
Solving complex problems for Customers in a sustainable way is not doable at an individual level with sequential hand-off to the next available role-functioner.
Explicit clarification :
if we are developing a feature that is meant to solve a Customer pain point -- by ourselves -- a builder of one -- and we code our functionality to the point where we think its solving the pain point --> THEN hand off to the next available role function, for the next sequential phase (usually trying to inspect quality in ), then this is ford and taylor assembly line, don't think, don't collaborate, top-down implementation of work.
( If there is collaboration in this process, then who is back-filling the now absent place in line? Will the organization hire more folks to keep the line moving and widgets assembling?? All at the expense of the Customer??? )
Teamwork is not a "happens if/when ready and available" asynchronous service.
This anti-team-pattern when played out remotely, is really no different than "pick-up when ready AND if available" style of remote patterns we see every day in services like Uber and DoorDash. Except we - THE CUSTOMER PAYS FOR EVERY AVAILALBE Uber and DoorDash driver that happens to be on..
-----
If we took the absolute most skilled individuals in the world at each respective functional silo and had them complete with a cross-functional, collaborative Team, the plug-n-playing of individual rock-stars would lose every time.
The flow of work through functional silos is grounded AND only doable based off of predicted solutions, pre-designed, pre-determined, and "phase-able" delivered via big-bang chunks of work -- this is economies-of-scale and culturally defaults to individual blame at the issue
The cross-functional team is focused on discovering what Customer's actually need, never assuming, and experimenting over-and-over to understand what Customer's value is and how to deliver it as effectively as possible (PDSA) -- this is economies-of-flow and culturally defaults to curiosity and learning focused on the systems leading to the issue
The ever-growing trend to confuse remote work with asynchronous work and the push towards "async-first" ways of working in "modern distributed environments" is going to damage the way we produce software in the long run.
My broken-record mantra: "remote" is the opposite of "local", not "synchronous".
