#EarthDay was first held on the 22 April in 1970. 54 years later, it is clear that EVERY day needs to be treated as a day where we all step up, and support environmental protection. The theme this year is 'Plastics vs Planet'. This year, I pledge to: 🌳 Reduce: First and foremost I intend to buy less things. I will also continue to buy second-hand clothes and items, and encourage others to do the same. This week I found a bicycle that was going into landfill, and got it fixed up. It's rusty and doesn't look good, but it works just fine. 🌳 Keep developing my connection to Nature: I personally find that the more I spend time in nature, the more I want to be involved in the critical work ahead of us to protect it. I've also taken part in Earth-connection courses at centres such as Embercombe, and have done land-based volunteering (see photo of my woodland camp). 🌳 Practice active travel: So will walk, run, cycle or use public transport before I drive or fly. What will you pledge to do this #EarthDay? #EarthDay #PlanetVsPlastics #EnvironmentalCrisis #PersonalPledge

1. Earth Month was started by a group of activists after they witnessed a massive, destructive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969. 2. Wisconsin senator Gaylor Nelson wanted to harness the energy of the anti-war movement for environmental activism, which inspired a group of activists to start a proactive environmental initiative, which they called Earth Day. 3. Earth Month became a month-long extension of Earth Day, both of which have been celebrated and recognized in the U.S. since 1970. 4. By 1990, Earth Month reached a global scale when 200 million people from 141 countries joined in participating in the month-long event. 5. The theme of this year’s Earth Day and Earth Month is “Invest in Our Planet” — creating a “partnership for the planet” that accounts for all people, and holds businesses and governments accountable. #EarthMonth
