Today is World Philanthropy Day… and just over a week until the holiday season of giving kicks off. Did you know that the Greek root of philanthropy can be literally translated as "loving people"? We can’t think of a better way to love people than making sure we plan for and invest into their future. WakeUP, like most nonprofits, is dependent on the generosity of donors that value our work and help us make a difference in the lives of residents across Wake County as we plan for tomorrow TODAY. Growth is happening across Wake County because this is an amazing place to live and we want to make sure that it stays that way for all people AND natural resources. We spend most of the year keeping you updated on all things sustainable planning across Wake County, but this time of year we will be asking for your help and support! Giving is easy as donations can be made on our website. All donations go to support our education and mobilization efforts as we aim to raise awareness and ensure community leaders, partners, and residents are informed on and actively engaged in sustainable planning practices that consider the impact on our residents and environment. Financial support is just one way to engage philanthropy, though. Looking for ways to give back to your community? Start by finding a cause that resonates with you and get involved. Here are a few more ideas to help you get started: - Donate food to a local food bank - Give blood to help those in need - Volunteer as a firefighter to help keep your community safe - Spend time volunteering at a local senior center - Become a mentor by becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister - Sponsor or coach a youth sports team to help kids stay active and engaged - Donate to a local charity to support those in need - Help the homeless in your community - And remember, sometimes a small gesture like saying "hello" or asking how someone is doing can brighten someone's day. PHILANTHROPY ISN'T WORKING Let’s say you’re a residential home builder and you donate a cheque once a year to a charity. That’s awesome. But I’ll challenge you ... ❓ Why that charity? ❓ Do you have a personal connection to the cause? Or did it just seem like a good one to donate to? BUT WHAT IF you build residential homes because you have a core belief that “humanity deserves to have their basic needs met by having a roof over their head”? And every decision you make as a company revolves around that belief and helping to meet ‘that basic human need’. So you give your non-trades employees time off to help Habitat for Humanity build homes for deserving families, for instance. With a proper framework to follow, there is a myriad of other ways you can embed that belief into the DNA of your company to come up with meaningful ways to bring that impact to life. That’s a different narrative. Hopefully, you can see the difference. Done right, this type of shift gives everyone in your company a different purpose for coming in every day and more meaning beyond their paycheque. Did you know that 200,000 people are living with sight loss in London and just under 700,000 (1 in every 12 adults) are living with a sight threatening condition? That’s why we are working with Fight for Sight / Vision Foundation, to help them support their vision of a future where people living with sight loss are equal citizens and preventable blindness is a thing of the past. We awarded a grant to the organisation to deliver an online event for blind and partially sighted people between 16 and 25, highlighting the importance of maintaining mental fitness. The event served as a prequel to a set of four in-person activity days organised in partnership with Jamie’s Farm. Each activity day offered 10 young people the chance to spend a day outdoors in nature, working with animals and participating in challenges and activities that allowed them to explore themselves and their well-being journeys. “It was great to be given tasks that you don’t normally do and be given the opportunity to complete them independently. I particularly enjoyed interacting with the animals and chopping firewood.” – Sam, Event Participant IICF recognises that the UK has one of the poorest rates of social mobility in the developed world. We’re working to change this by uniting the industry in volunteering, leadership and grants to social mobility charities. In the UK we’ve raised nearly £2M to change the lives of more than 7,500 people in the communities in which we live and work. Individual donors contribute 68% of the $427 billion philanthropy industry. Yet, fundraisers often shield donors from having hard conversations about the practices and theories underpinning modern philanthropy and how they perpetuate the injustices and inequities nonprofits aim to eliminate. To pivot away from toxic charity toward a shared vision for community wellbeing that is transformative instead of transactional, we must: ➡️ Center race, equity, and social justice. ➡️ Be thoughtful about which funders we take on. ➡️ Share resources and ideas to foster a network of support. ➡️ Value time invested as equally as money. Community-centric fundraising calls for fundraisers and donors to grapple with and address the root causes of inequity, including the destructive effects of capitalism and how we may be complicit in furthering them through our practices.
