We're preparing to roll out a new monitoring network to collect data on active transport to better inform effective, evidence-based decision-making in a cost-effective way. The new sensors will monitor road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists, 24/7, 365 days a year, providing real-time data on travel speeds and path usage. This data will allow the Council to make informed decisions for better transport strategies, urban design, public safety, and economic planning. Privacy is a top priority, and VivaCity was selected because of its privacy-by-design approach which ensures that no identifying information is collected. The data will be used by various Council groups, including Transport & Infrastructure and Bike network planning, for a comprehensive view of how Wellingtonians move around the city. 📢 Investment in #intelligenttraffic management is expected to rise from the 2023 global total of $10.6 billion to $18.5 billion by 2028, as projected by a study conducted by Juniper Research. This robust 75% growth is primarily attributed to the increased financial support from governments for #smartcity initiatives, with a particular focus on transportation as the cornerstone of urban transformation endeavors. The research highlights the critical importance of implementing traffic analysis and systems during the early phases of city planning to circumvent costly retrofits later on. This is underscored by the fundamental role traffic flow plays in shaping a city's infrastructure and overall functionality. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the need for solution providers to tailor smart traffic management systems to meet the specific requirements of cities in emerging regions. https://lnkd.in/ektk26qa #trafficmanagement #ITS

What can AI bring to our cities beyond notions of smart cities? This fascinating article from Bloomberg reveals how technology is already shaping responses to traffic issues in Austin. "Traffic models are slippery things, presented as scientific fact when they are actually best guesses, extrapolations of the future from the past. “A lot of people want to avoid the conversation of what is desirable, and they just say, ‘Well, the number says this, and so we’ve got to accommodate it,’” says Robert Goodspeed, a professor of urban planning at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He calls this “colonizing the future.” If you plan for a future of car-centric sprawl, that’s what you’ll get." [can we also talk about how a transport planner is called Goodspeed?] Closer to home, SilaCities has found that connectivity is the #3 top topic that's important to UAE residents in all cities, just behind social spaces and social infrastructure. By harnessing the power of information, we can unlock our knowledge of today for better outcomes tomorrow. Outdated models sometimes paint constraints that aren't there, while we can instead embrace the potential that AI and technology can bring to our cities.
