According to the Royal Institute of British Architects’ (RIBA) think tank Building Futures new survey, we have a tough road ahead of us. The year long study asked, who will design our built environment, what role will architects have, and how might practice change by 2025.

At the end of last year, architects and designers gathered in Canberra for the 2023 Australian Architecture Conference. One of the key themes raised was whether we should be striving to consider architecture as temporary or permanent. Kevin Carmody of Carmody Groarke posed the question (paraphrased by Andrew Broffman): “How long are we designing things to last?” Carmody asked. “Permanence,” he suggested, “is a privilege of the previous generation of architects,” whereas our work today should be accepted as temporary.” This is an interesting question to consider, one with many angles. Routinely, we now discuss the idea that a building should be able to last generations, as this is the most sustainable approach. Although this is true, thinking about it in practice is a different story. How much control do architects really have over whether their building will last a lifetime? Of course, they can do their best to encourage enduring materiality, programmatic flexibility, and design elements, but ultimately, it’s the client's prerogative and, in some cases, the contractors too. The conference also heard from the journalist Stan Grant, who was far from complimentary of the discipline, “What is architecture, if not the act of keeping someone out?” These are important truths to realise and, in case we needed more convincing on the value of engaging with Country in our work, provide an interesting consideration to the temporary or permanent debate. AIBC updates on Architects Regulation. Would be good to see some relaxations to allow more designers to be involved in missing middle housing. Right now only an architect can design more than a four unit residential. Flip side is that there are no mandatory certifications for designers.

P42 The Crisis of Utopia: Le Corbusier at Algiers To absorb that multiplicity, to temper the improbable with the certainty of the plan, to reconcile organic structure and disorganization by exacerbating the dialectical relationship between them, to demonstrate that the highest level of productive planning coincides with the maximum “productivity of the spirit”: such were the objectives that Le Corbusier delineated, with a lucidity unparalleled within progressive European architectural culture at the time, ever aware of the triple front on which modern architecture had to fight. If architecture was now synonymous with organization of production, it was also true that distribution and use were also determinant factors of the cycle, in addition to production itself. The architect is an organizer, not a designer of objects. This statement of Le Corbusier’s was not a slogan, but an imperative linking intellectual initiative and la civilisation machinist. As the advance guard of this civilisation, architects, in anticipating and determining its plans (however limited to specific sectors), must articulate their activity in three different directions: (1) by addressing an appel aux industriels, and a choice of building typologies, to business and industry; (2) by pursuing the search for an authority capable of reconciling construction and urban planning with civil reorganization programs through the institution of the CIAM; (3) by exploiting the articulation of form at its highest level in order to make the public an active and conscious user of the architectural product. https://lnkd.in/gavREBSV
