Want positive brand association with an event more in-demand than a Taylor Swift concert...for FREE? Most of the consumers attending this event are 100% loyal. So much so that even their families have adopted the same level of brand loyalty. Next Saturday (12/9), is the 124th Army-Navy Game, which according to Patriots president Jonathan Kraft, while speaking at Gillette Stadium said the demand for tickets to this year's Army-Navy Game is greater than any other event at the facility, including Taylor Swift! For many, there is only 1 acceptable choice, Navy...and for those who are wrong, Army (I'm 100% biased). Some companies spends millions to sponsor the game. On the winning side their brochures and free swag say "Go Navy, Beat Army", on the 'other side' the message is different. However, companies can associate themselves with THE GAME without having to pick sides...spend money to sponsor it, or on a media buy during it. To join the conversation and positively associate yourself with the game, its fans and the greater military community consumer segment FOR FREE...start posting on social media based on your geography! If you're near an area with more Army presence (actively serving members and/or Army Veterans) go ahead and support their losing cause. If you're near water, or have a larger Navy Veteran presence, post messages of support for the winning team! Or if you're committed to Switzerland level neutrality, post messages of support for the game and all who serve, served and support America. (but you should absolutely pick sides and post "Go Navy!")

How do you build unshakeable brand loyalty? . . . . You do unexpected stuff. Aka... we do Taylor Swift stuff. Like once, Taylor CRASHED a fan's wedding and played the piano for them. Totally unexpected, completely heart warming, and... a genius strategy to build brand loyalty and fan base. The internet went bananas. The video has 1.2 million views! Think about that... over 1.2 MILLION people now love Taylor swift even more. The best part... more concert tickets SOLD! (who wouldn't want to go to her concert after watching that video?) Now imagine if Taylor Swift offered a discount to that fan. (Snore) It wouldn't have built that genuine connection with that fan... And 1.2 MILLION other people. Unexpected experiences leave lasting memories and trust... far better than a measly discount. The lesson? It's better to focus on building trust with your customers... Not with loyalty programs and discounts... But by surprising them, delighting them, and showing them you genuinely care. What are your thoughts on this?

For years JCPenney struggled with sales and their identity mostly because they didn’t understand their customers. After being acquired by Simon Property Group and Brookfield Asset Management they are back and their new “Make it Count” campaign takes the spotlight. Focused on, you guessed it… the #customer. The campaign, “”Make It Count,” that center(s) on four core areas: making fashion accessible, offering a compelling loyalty program, supporting varied local and cultural communities and reinforcing a commitment to positive change” is a $1B initiative that is focused on improving the customer experience and operations. I believe that finally, J.C. Penny is on the right path to success, especially in a market where we are seeing off-price retailers like TJ Maxx booming. As per the article below, here are some reasons why I believe this campaign will work: -         Focus on the customer- Offering products at prices that matter to their base customer is important. -         Customer Segmentation- Being visible where the customer is in sports, music, and other entertainment. As well as supporting its diverse demographics and offering experiences in the customers' interests like beauty, cooking and others. -         - A company-wide initiative- Working cross-functionally with internal and external teams is essential to succeed in this major undertaking. While some companies focus on working in their solos is seems that J.C Penney has involved teams like merchandising, marketing, sales, and others to launch this campaign. Given that my first college intern job was at J.C.
