One thing we often come across here at Gun.io when talking to our clients is how to understand the cost of hiring developers remotely. How do you know if you are overpaying? Divisive debate: Should all technical managers have hands-on field experience and still write code even when they are CTOs, VPs, and board executives? For Elon Musk, all managers must "spend 20% of their time coding". BUT, Managing is a different job! Sports managers do not play anymore "20% of their time", they just did in the past. I say: a manager must understand 100% of what the staff is doing; however, no matter why or how achieves that: if writing X% of code or no code, just keep up to date so it's respected by the staff. I was thinking about this as a 48 year old, at the end of a year of tech layoffs (Happy New Year!), and also how things changed in the past 25+ years. I wrote a lot of code in the 1990s and early 2000s (Assembly -> C/C++ -> Java mostly; then some Javascript -> Python etc.). As I managed >10 people and as an entrepreneur doing sales etc., I reduced coding down to zero. I keep up to date just to be able to read new things, and quickly study fancy new languages I may never use (Rust, Dart, ...), but I can help more in other activities than coding. PS: Hire me!
