50 million years ago crocodiles lived above the arctic circle. Without serious climate action, they could reappear near the northern hemisphere’s doors, along with more serious consequences. At the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference, 196 parties signed the Paris Agreement to limit global average temperature increases to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels—not only to keep the crocodiles from reaching the gateway to the arctic, but to prevent more widespread ecological damage. Yet, to many, it’s still not clear why the world agreed on this threshold and why halting global warming is relevant for human prosperity. ⏳ On July 22nd this year, the climate clock will tick below five years, meaning in just over one month we will have less than five years to keep global warming below 1.5C degrees. There are a lot of things we can do to act on this and carbon removal is one of them. We can still fix this! After my 919th post about human-caused climate change and accelerated global warming in 16 months, someone asked me: ‘I see. But what are your solutions? Can we still fix this?’ This was my response: Yes, we can. — First we would draw up a list with the top 10 highest priority actions required to address overshoot or overconsumption, when a populating exceeds the carrying capacity of its habitat (see comment section). — We would use that list to recognize the importance of addressing overshoot on a global level, so, top-down in stead of bottom-up. — We would incorporate three main areas of attention: environmental pollution, biodiversity loss and climate change. Each of these areas would focus on a top 10 highest priority actions. — Then we would draft up a master plan on the global level, the World Overshoot Mitigation and Sustain Programme, divided into sub-projects on the national level, and sub-sub-projects on the regional level. — Then we would translate all that in a detailed Forward Motion Swift Action Initiative describing the actions/efforts required to move from guaranteed suprasystemic collapse to a fighting chance to survive. — To support the Global Programme Plan we would come to an agreement on how to enforce the actions and efforts required to realize this program, with sanctions at non-compliance.
