STCW compliance is, of course, a statutory requirement but does it ensure a constant and consistent high level of professional competence on the bridge of your ships? A topic for debate maybe? How do you regularly assess the competence of your bridge teams? How do you identify strengths and weaknesses? How do you target training towards those who need additional knowledge and skills? Ensuring safety in enclosed spaces onboard ships is a matter of life and death. The Managers of The American P&I Club, in collaboration with IDESS IT, present e-learning module: "The Case of the Silent Assassin." This module describes a sad real-life incident in which two crew members lost their lives as a result of entering an enclosed space without following correct safety procedures. The case emphasizes the importance of conducting thorough risk assessments, ensuring tanks are properly isolated and ventilated, testing tank atmospheres before entry, securing tank entry permits, wearing appropriate PPE, and having rescue equipment ready. It discusses the critical need to follow all safety protocols without exception. This story serves as an important reminder that safety procedures are non-negotiable and must be followed at all times. Failure to do so can cost lives. As we head into summer, now is the time when Domestic Commercial Vessel (DCV) operators and owners will be looking to recruit new and casual crew members for the upcoming season.    We recently engaged Taverner Research Group to conduct an industry survey on induction training of casual crew members as an initiative to help DCV owners, operators and crew members improve safety practices aboard their vessels.     With 22% of survey participants reporting that they received mostly theoretical training on fire emergency procedures, the survey identified the need to provide new and casual crew members with formal induction training. The training should include practical elements such as hands-on practice, longer training periods and ongoing instruction from experienced crew/masters.     Operators and owners should ensure their induction training procedures effectively cover all safety practices for the vessel.     💡Now is a good time to revisit your safety management systems and consider how induction training procedures can be improved.    Learn more about the key findings: https://lnkd.in/gTyp2PCG #FerrySafety #DCV #NSW

Just wrapped up the 40-hour Hazardous Materials Instructor Training (HMIT) funded by Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and taught by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. Bill Reese stated he's offering the three-day HMIT introduction class in December 2024. If you're in need of HM training, it's a great no-cost resource. A couple of things that sort of dawned on me is the reaction time it takes the various government agencies to fix regulations: § 177.800 Purpose and scope of this part and responsibility for compliance and training. (a) Purpose and scope. This part prescribes requirements, in addition to those contained in parts 171, 172, 173, 178 and 180 of this subchapter, that are applicable to the acceptance and transportation of hazardous materials by private, common, or contract carriers by motor vehicle. Since the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is no longer classifying carriers as "common" or "contract" PHMSA and the FMCSA have work to do to modernize the regulations. FMCSA and PHMSA need to replace all references to "common" and "contract" carrier with may be "for-hire?" Hope everyone is enjoying their week!
