According to a new study in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, women 65 and older are diagnosed more frequently with advanced #cervicalcancer, and subsequently experience worse with long-term survival compared to younger women. Researchers used data from the California Cancer Registry to identify 12,442 women ages 21 and older who were diagnosed with cervical cancer between 2009 and 2018, along with the stage of their cancer at diagnosis and their five-year survival rates. About 71% of patients 65 and older were diagnosed with late-stage disease (defined as stages 2 through 4), compared with 48% of younger women. Additionally, five-year survival was significantly lower among older women compared with patients under 65, and women 80 and older had the lowest survival of all age groups. https://lnkd.in/eFvwJFq3 #CancerResearch

We are working with the good folks at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to investigate at trends in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) between cancer and noncancer Medicare beneficiaries over 65. This month we published a study in Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention about this topic. Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER)-Medicare Health Outcomes Survey (MHOS), we find that patient-reported measures of mental health for those with cancer improved more between 2008 and 2019 than a matched noncancer comparison group. Physical health scores, in contrast, remained stable across time. The SEER-MHOS data remain an excellent source for linked cancer registry and patient reported measures for older adults to better understand the impact of cancer care in this population. Liver cancer is becoming a growing concern among Latinos, underscoring the importance of comprehending the factors driving this trend. Published in the journal Cancer, Dr. Wendy Setiawan, co-leader of the USC Norris Cancer Epidemiology Program, and her team analyzed risk for the disease across more than 30,000 Mexican Americans, finding third-generation Mexican Americans 66% more likely to get liver cancer than the first generation. In the future, identifying the risk factors within this group may facilitate the discovery of the underlying causes behind these observations. Lacrimal Gland Cancers Need More Attention ⚠️ Early detection is critical for these malignancies. Tumors involving the lacrimal gland are fortunately rare, but their scarcity makes them difficult to study. To gain insight into the epidemiology of lacrimal gland tumors in the United States, researchers analyzed data from the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries from 1996 to 2018, hoping to identify trends that might guide care.
