I attended a reception of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute’s Society last evening. I am never more humbled, nor more energized, than when I am in the company of so many survivors, caregivers, physicians, researchers, and clinicians who are standing together to vanquish cancer. The fellowship in the room was palpable, with people sharing their stories of struggle, triumph, pain, hope, perseverance, success, and loss. Although so many of us were strangers prior to last evening, we spoke easily amongst ourselves about the bond that brought us together – the never-ending battle to defeat cancer before it starts and after it strikes. The volunteer efforts around cancer-focused events that I heard about were so expansive – such extraordinary people reflecting humanitarianism, activism, and compassion at its best.
Dana Farber, a truly sacred place, has been instrumental in more than half of the cancer drugs approved by the FDA in the past five years. There is no more impressive testament to the commitment and excellence of the employees who are responsible for those contributions.
The fifth anniversary of my stem cell transplant is next week – there was no better way to celebrate than with those who have achieved similar milestones, those who aspire to reach them, and the pantheon of medical practitioners who are making them possible. There is no doubt that I am here because of Dana Farber. It literally was my life blood. For those of you in the Boston area, if you are not already actively supporting Dana Farber in some way, I implore you to do so. Cancer incidences are rising at an alarming rate. It is imperative that medicine and science keep pace. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Inc #cancer #volunteer #pmc #jimmyfund #lls #pharma #boston #massachusetts #healthcare

2moThis is a great list of ways researchers can share their work in ways that are easy to understand, memorable, and build trust. I counsel my clients to start with analogies and layer in detail and specifics for deeper conversations or longer form articles, always keeping the role each study plays in the bigger picture in mind.
