HOWEVER, WHEN THAT IS NOT PRACTICAL OR FEASIBLE, IN ORDER TO SECURE ACCESS TO PALLIATIVE/HOSPICE CARE, TELEHEALTH WOULD CLEARLY BE BETTER THAN NO CARE OR GAPS IN CARE.

This article brought me back to my mom's journey with polycythemia vera and her never ending search for information, treatments, nutrition tips and more. No matter what type of cancer or diagnosis, this quote rings true: "...there's kind of the shock factor. And once you get over the shock factor, it's a different language that patients are learning, it's a different lifestyle that they're learning, they have to learn to adjust their entire life for it. And many patients don't know what to ask because they don't know what they don't know." Excited to share my newest publication in #jamanetworkopen! In this study, we explored the annual use of disease-modifying treatments (DMTs) in individuals with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) from 2014-2021. Our findings revealed low uptake of DMTs, despite recent approval of newer therapies. Alarmingly, nearly 3 out of 4 individuals did not receive any DMTs. This is particularly significant considering SCD predominantly affects an historically marginalized population and, for years, treatment options for SCD have lagged behind other comparable diseases with lower prevalence. This disparity calls for a critical reflection on pharmacoequity, reminding us of the urgent need to improve access and utilization of effective treatments in this patient population. On the heels of Kate Middleton’s announcement, Time health correspondent Jamie Ducharme explores possible reasons for the rise in cancer diagnoses among young adults citing a recent study that estimated early-onset diagnoses will increase by 30% by 2030. Colorectal, gastrointestinal, lung and early-onset breast cancer are those with the highest increase in incidence among young adults. Experts believe there is no single factor to blame but rather the combination of processed foods, not exercising enough, drinking too much alcohol, and rising obesity rates.
