A few years ago, I underwent major surgery to repair a shattered cervical disc. During recovery, the uncommonly-kind man that lives next door saw me in my bandages and with a cane, and gently inquired about my situation and how he could help.
When I shared my full story, he became visibly upset, berating me for not previously sharing my struggle with him or seeking help during the months and years leading up to my procedure. As a general contractor, he had seen me working on my own home remodel, yet I'd never asked for any of his help, despite my hidden pain and struggle.
His words served as a powerful lesson worth sharing:
Kindness and charity are almost inherently selfish, because they provide a good feeling to the giver.
He asked, “Why did you deny me the opportunity to experience the joy of helping you?”
🙉 We forget that others WANT to assist us.
🙊 We self-isolate when we’re afraid, hurt, or ill.
🙈 We succumb to the poison of fear
Most often, when we experience fear and social isolation, we actually should listen to the advice offered by our fears, but only so that we may do the exact opposite of what it tells us!
So remember: Don’t deny others the chance to feel good by helping you. Just reach out.
And when others reach out to you, embrace the opportunity to experience the same joy. As Simon points out, it often only takes 8 minutes. 🌟
