The real demographic impact in China won’t fully hit until the middle of the century, when many of those born during the one-child policy will reach retirement—while still caring for aging parents, said Wang. By 2050, the U.N. now projects 31% of Chinese will be 65 or older. By 2100, the share will be 46%, approaching half of the population. In the U.S., the share is expected to be 23% and 28%, respectively. Beijing as well as demographers and sociologists have said a highly educated population and the advancement of technology such as artificial intelligence, could help China weather such shocks, as more jobs will be automated." Combined, these policies and growth have given China one of the lowest birth rates in the world. Today, China is trying to reverse its population decline. Not just because an aging population is hard to sustain economically, but because China’s impressive economic #growth, until now, has relied on its people. As China’s population challenges deepen over time, it might have to rethink how to grow its economy and care for its citizens".

first of all, I despise the BBC, but there's a really important lesson here for anyone doing business with China. Short-term thinking is not a rare thing. it's a deep, Coulthard embedded system into most things China. China one-child policy was a quick fix with serious consequences. much like a factory sacrificing quality for speed. knowingly pack subpar goods in the box, or giving a client a hard time just to make a buck. The thing we should always remember is , short term gains are considered a win, regardless of the consequences. Now, think about the following if they were willing to sacrifice the future of 300 million elderly citizens, and subsequently the future of the rest 1.4 billion citizens, do you really think they care about the quality, lead time, price or terms , your business needs ? https://lnkd.in/g-V98BYR

There are many negative consequences of China’s accelerated population decline. But while China’s demographic crisis looks like that of other neighboring countries, it is coming at a lower level of economic development, and the problems it poses are exacerbated by some of the unique characteristics of China’s political system.
