Throwback to our career exploration session last weekend. 20 years in the career and thankful for my career choice every single day. Some interviewees see this career as one that people try when they can’t find another job, others asked about the very real stigma of the career. For me, this was my first choice career, I truly wanted to be a financial consultant, as I believe it’s a career that allows me to make a difference to the lives of others. During the Firechat, was asked what are the traits to succeed in this career. 1. Hard work : Not just in this career, but in any career, there is no success without hard work. Don’t hope for an easy way out. Put in the required work in learning, building necessary skills set and grinding in the activities. The initial steep learning curve and grind will bring you far. 2. Willingness to get out of your comfort zone : This career will definitely require getting out of our comfort zone - it won’t be easy but you will definitely acquire new skills set and grow as an individual. Understand that nothing grows in the comfort zone and if you only do what you can do, then you will never be more than what you can be. So dare to try - once the discomfort becomes comfortable - you know that you have leveled up and acquired a new skillset. 3. Heart for people - many people are attracted by the high income and flexibility in the career and there’s nothing wrong. But to really be able to make it in this career, you need to have the heart for people, you need to genuinely want to help people, because people don’t care how much you know till they know how much you care. 4. Integrity - This is something that cannot be compromised. Treat clients the way you would want to be treated. Integrity is meaning what u say - so ensure u take responsibility for ur words, and do your work in a way that you can be proud of yourself. 5. Persistence - and lastly, persist till u succeed. There will be good and bad days, see every failure as feedback and know that if u keep improving, you will definitely get to where you want to be. Over the years I've figured out that I'm pretty good at lying to myself. Okay, maybe more accurate to say that I'm very adept at creating feel-good narratives about why I make certain decisions that result in certain actions and outcomes. One of the unique things about having a week between gigs is that I can look at myself as a professional apart from actually having a specific job. While self-reflection isn't bad, real growth for me happens when someone *else* is involved and can actively spot the assumptions disguising themselves as "truths" in my career narrative. I'm lucky enough to have crossed-paths with Jordan Hirsch at FishTree and it's been awesomely eye-opening. The impact of having someone trained to be a truly objective ally (not a boss, not a co-worker, not a friend, not a partner) for me and my career has me on a whole new level. Not just big picture thinking, but also real concrete daily things I can do to feel balanced and fulfilled. Highly recommend checking him out if you're wanting to re-calibrate in the new year. 🎆

🚪 When One Door Closes...Are You Watching the Walls? 🚪 Last week I was facilitating a masterclass on resilience and one participant shared that he was really disappointed with a situation in the office. The others without noticing, started sharing their perspectives and his own mind just expanded and he could see that he could actionly take advantage of that situation... It kept me thinking that disappointment isn't just a part of life; it's our uninvited, persistent tutor. That job promotion that went to someone else? A tutorial in resilience. The trust shattered by a friend? A tough lesson in forgiveness. And that shiny new gadget that wasn't as shiny in reality? A reminder that joy isn't unboxed, it's created. Here's the deal: life’s letdowns don't need to be your downfall. They're the plot twists in your success story. 📖✨ But let’s be real, it’s tempting to obsess on the ‘closed door’. We all do it. That was completely unexpected. I didn’t foresee last week’s post to take off like it did, but I’m grateful because it did a few things for me. 1️⃣ It reminded me that I am not alone on my current journey. Losing your job unexpectedly sucks, and it’s easy to feel like others won’t understand, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m thankful for the messages of encouragement from others who have been in my shoes or are currently. 2️⃣ I was also reminded of the strong connections I’ve already made through this platform. I’ve made a few dear friends that I connect with away from here, and their support means everything. Special shout out to Ana Shah for her consistency, inner-cheerleader, and humor right when it’s needed. 3️⃣ I expanded my network by a few hundred, which is awesome for a people-person like me. All from diverse professional and personal backgrounds, and I’ve already been able to chat with a few about our experiences and where to go from here. 4️⃣ I’ve learned that some folks think taking time to feel your feelings and acknowledge where you’re at is unnecessary when you’re out of work. Not sure how skipping over processing such a huge life change is productive to the job search, but we cry over here so we can keep moving along. 5️⃣ The feedback helped me do some introspection and realize that sometimes things happen to lead you in another direction. I’m not exactly sure where that is for me right now, but I do have a few ideas and am working diligently to fully flesh them out. Onward we go.
