CAPE ORLANDO, and gutless USCG We are mandated to have Vessel Security Plans, all which must be approved, implemented and drills conducted. Unless the Cape Orlando was in care and custody of a vessel maintenance firm / shipyard, yesterday’s protest and illegal boarding by Pro-Palestine / domestic terrorists demonstrated a tremendous failure in the vessel’s VSP. Why did the USCG send a negotiator to the vessel to clear the protesters that boarded the ship illegally and not a properly armed squad? The USCG runs around in their RIBs and other boats brandishing weapons, yet when an actual event requires force they send a negotiator? USCG it’s time to stop grandstanding and get the job you’ve been trained to do done, damn the politicians and do your job.

Recently attended a less-lethal Impact Munitions Instructor course taught by Defense Technology. What’s even better is the instructor was a friend and trusted colleague to my agency. These trainings allow police to utilize resources that can de-escalate a hostile and volatile situation that otherwise would need to be controlled by lethal means. The #1 priority is always to protect the victim but police will get called to incidents that are more complex than a simple “bad guy/good guy” breakdown. The “bad guy” is often someone who is at a low point in their life and needs help. The goal is to protect life and sometimes that means using force such as a Direct Impact Munition to disarm an assailant. At the end of the day, police need to be using the lowest level of force that can effectively and safely protect the public.

There are two important keys to this technique........Step in and BEND. When you step in you're "cutting off" the attacker. Stick Combat: We "stick" to the ancients for modern times. Training in stick fighting is nothing new. However, we do not train the way most do. For example, we improvise baton training for close quarters. If you cannot use your baton in a hallway or an elevator, it will not be of much use to you. As a certified instructor trained by a Chief of Police and a law enforcement professional in two different areas of batons and with alot of hands on experience, I have learned real sciences behind the baton. The Warrior's in ancient Egypt trained for close quarters. I am here to share my knowledge with police, security, and corrections. I hope my insight can help solve some problems in this area. Studies shows that police officers who were assaulted did not see their side less lethal baton as an option for de-escalating force. The ole saying goes, it's not what you have it is how you use it. In this picture, I have a very short 20 inch baton demonstrating what it could look like against a knife attack. We have trained people how to use the Asp 20 or our GR8 flashlight 6 inches. If your baton is not practical it will not be tactical. In ancient Egypt , soliders were taught the staff and short stick that help soldiers geared them up for knife and sword fighting.
