The continued collaboration across the sector is essential. It is really encouraging to see a strong and visible commitment to develop a road safety strategy focused on reducing deaths and injuries on our roads. It's so important that a new strategy includes a long term commitment to Collision Prevention, a change to vehicle design regulations, such as Transport for London's Direct Vision Standard HGV Permit Scheme that has seen a significant reduction in road fatalities and serious injuries since its introduction, This government should act immediately to implement the four policy recommendations included in the 2024 Road Safety Manifesto prepared by PACTS. VIZ-OVALZ® is pleased to join with all the UK’s leading road safety organisations in supporting this urgent call to action. There is no reason to delay any of the recommendations. Over the last decade Ministers have lost the ambition to improve UK road safety and given up on any pretence to meet the United Nation target to halve road deaths by 2030. As National Road Safety Week kicks off, let’s pause and reflect on the impact of road accidents beyond the tragic loss of lives. While fatalities are undoubtedly devastating, there’s another side to road safety that often goes unnoticed: permanent life-altering injuries. 🧠 Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) are one such consequence. These catastrophic injuries can occur in an instant, leaving survivors with long-term health challenges. As we navigate our daily commutes, it’s crucial to remember that road safety isn’t just about avoiding accidents—it’s about safeguarding our futures. Here are some key reminders: 1. Share the Road with Heavy Vehicles: Last year, 1,272 lives were lost in crashes on Australia’s roads, with 187 involving heavy vehicles. When driving near trucks, give them extra space and avoid lingering in their blind spots. 2. Know the Warning Signs of Unsafe Driving: Whether you’re behind the wheel or a passenger, recognise signs like speeding, poor decision-making, and drifting across lanes. These behaviours can lead to life-changing consequences. 3. Seek Medical Clearance After a Brain Injury: If you’ve experienced a traumatic brain injury, consult your doctor before returning to driving or consider a driving assessment with a trained OT. Brain injuries can impact crucial skills needed for safe driving, such as concentration, memory, and reaction time. Remember, every journey matters. 📣 It's Rail Safety Week! 🚊 Initiatives like Rail Safety Week and transport networks taking responsibility for keeping the billions of passengers they transport each year more heart-safe could make a significant dent in the sudden cardiac arrest death rates in our country. Suppose you apply the sudden cardiac arrest survival statistics to the number of public transport passengers. In that case, it highlights the importance of first aid and health provisions being accessible in case of emergencies. Government statistics show that during 2019/2020: ➡️ 4.5 billion people were using local buses per year ➡️ There were 3.1 billion journeys by rail or underground ➡️ Over a quarter of these (28%) were for leisure purposes With that level of usage and the success of campaigns over recent years, many transport providers are actively investing in defibrillators across their transport networks.
