#MajorProject // The first stage of Melbourne’s Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) project is underway with boots on the ground across all six station sites. The project will deliver a 90km rail line that aims to relieve CBD congestion by linking every major train service from the Frankston Line to the Werribee Line via Melbourne Airport. The ARA’s Value of Rail report highlights that rail contributes almost $30 billion to the Australian economy each year and supports 165,000 jobs - enabling the development of thriving and sustainable cities and towns. What's next for SRL? Works on the first tunnel access structure in Heatherton for the SRL project will begin this week. The contract for the tunnels between Glen Waverley and Box Hill will be awarded later this year, while two consortia have also been shortlisted to build the trains and signalling system, and to operate the network. 📕 View ARA's Value of Rail report: https://lnkd.in/gKH9PhpG 📰 Read media release: https://lnkd.in/gDJu92ey 👷♀️ More information about the project: https://lnkd.in/gFb5CMRg Suburban Rail Loop Authority #rail #melbourne #railprojects #underconstruction

I had sort of followed the Melbourne plans for more urban rail (it's a tick you develop for cities you once visited), yet never fully realised the immense scale of this project (between $30bn and $60bn). What a fantastic investment and long term (100-ish years) vision for the quality of life around #Melbourne. #urban_rail #urban_mobility #sustainablemobility #metro #Shift2Rail https://lnkd.in/ePJFPERh

03 July 2024 Press Release BRTA is concerned that the track-record of previous governments over decades has left the existing rail network depleted, rationalised and run-down and poured £billions into new roads and upgrading roads (A27/A24) which attracts increasing volumes of traffic, makes for more rat-runs across country to join other queues, increasing pressure on land use allocation for endless parking spaces, when we need environmentally and socially to make using public transport (especially more rail journeys) more amenable, affordable and accessible. Key Rail Projects we want support for: 1. Guildford-Cranleigh-Horsham, the Arundel Curve and a Phase 2 look at the direct line to Shoreham from Horsham with linking bridges and curves included in modern designs. 2. Polegate-Stone Cross direct line reinstatement/realigned new build to shave 20 minutes end-to-end Brighton-Ashford transits by trains giving more capacity for Eastbourne specific services and challenging the appeal of endless road use. 3. A new curve from the Tonbridge line towards Gatwick which could link to a host of existing services more than having to change at Redhill all the time. 4. A study to look at linking Tonbridge with the Guildford Line direct at Redhill and 5. Electrification of the North Downs Line to enable semi-fast Thameslink services into Guildford and possible Reading as they do likewise to access Horsham. BRTA believes these projects need a switch from £27 billion new roads fund to pep up the Rail Reopening Fund which was pitted at a mere £500 million for all Great Britain, which is, given a need to cut emissions and congestion, a meagre and unequal recognition of what rail can offer. 6. A rail link corridor from Tonbridge-Brighton via Eridge, Uckfield and the Lewes area. End of Press Release Further Comment: Richard Pill, BRTA CEO 07752 096392 e. One of the things that has seriously hampered rail and transit expansion in the Toronto Region is how little we built in the 1990s and 2000s. However, if we don’t address the serious cost problems in our major transit projects (which we increasingly have good policy’s and ideas which we can use to do) then we will be facing another era of minimal building and slowdown.

RailNews // Light Rail has been a hot topic last week, with much welcomed news that the second stage of Parramatta's multibillion dollar rail project given the green light. In contrast, in our nation's capital, claims are being made that the Light Rail Stage 2B Commonwealth Park to Woden (Stage 2B) is not cost-effective. These claims simply do not take into consideration the huge, long-term economic benefits light rail delivers well beyond providing an efficient public transport solution. Light rail projects in Australia and across the globe have consistently shown to dramatically transform communities, driving urban renewal and growth along its corridor, supporting better housing and job opportunities. Light rail delivers the kind of significant economic, social and environmental benefits that buses cannot, whose routes can easily be stopped or altered at any time. The revitalisation of Northbourne Ave and around Dickson interchange due to the first stage of the Canberra Light Rail were testament to the positive impact that permanent public transport infrastructure has on investment and urban development. Please support and write in favour of this local rail reopening: https://lnkd.in/gwCWs4MM It would make the existing remnant rail network more relevant and boost patronage all year round, sustaining local businesses and informing widespread regeneration. The railway, even if 10 years, is a worthwhile project and can be modernised to inform end-to-end fast transit times and challenge the pro-road building lobby which informs endless demand for parking guzzling land which is needed for other things. If we take the Borders Line reopening, it was very much a cynical reception but devolution and campaigning resulted in the go-ahead and it has carried millions to a largely rural landscape and demand for full rebuild to Carlisle exists but the British Westminster Government has dithered despite the resounding support and exceeding usage data. You have to make a start, Oxford-Cambridge direct rail has taken 35 years campaigning, so 10 years is a drop in the ocean by comparison! Start now and take it seriously. https://lnkd.in/ety4Q4Sr Regeneration of West Wales and South West Wales in particular likely, more freight by rail as well. Jobs, sustaining hotels for families to revisit these locations rather than just walkers and single groupy camping styles. Wales needs diversity and all round year-on-year sustained vistorship. Please give this project your support. #rail #wales #transport #modalchoice #planning #cost #environment #infrastructure #dft #networkrail

What could a route extension of existing commuter rail services — or the creation of a new regional rail system — between Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley look like? As it turns out, the Government of British Columbia recently examined such concepts in a highly preliminary study completed in 2021, reported Daily Hive. "This study, released through a freedom of information request, identified three potential concepts that optimize the use of existing railway corridors and infrastructure to lower construction costs compared to establishing a new railway right-of-way, which would involve buying significant property." The study specifically focused on the area between eastern Metro Vancouver — Langley City and Langley Township — and the Fraser Valley as far east as Chilliwack." "One concept would extend TransLink’s existing West Coast Express commuter rail service southwards across the Fraser River from its current easternmost terminus of Mission to reach Abbotsford. The two other concepts would introduce regional rail to the Lower Mainland by using the existing Interurban railway corridor — starting from the new Langley City terminus of SkyTrain’s future Expo Line extension, with one concept ending at Mission and another concept ending in Chilliwack." https://lnkd.in/gPEB8cW3 #metrovancouver #transit #infrastructure #proposed #commuterrail

The #HopeValley upgrade in the north of #England is improving the railway between #Manchester and #Sheffield. The project is being promoted as a provision for more reliable and faster passenger journeys. However, the route is also vital to freight operations. It generates multiple flows from industrial plants and aggregates quarries. The latest part of the project is equally significant for both. #railfreight #railfreightnews #railcargonews

As many reflect on the #futureofdowntown and the #futureofwork and #office utilization, one key enduring value proposition for downtowns is the existing #transit infrastructure. Downtowns are often where many of our cities began and first built a dense transit network, which has often been reinforced over decades. Today, the level of transit infrastructure connecting to downtowns is unique and unparalleled in most #metropolitan regions. Pleased to co-author a piece with Issi Romem at MetroSight on behalf of VTS on this topic: https://lnkd.in/g4uv9ves We explore three points: 1. Building new #transit has become so hard that #downtowns’ infrastructure advantage will persist. 2. Location and #density matter. Even after decades of #suburbanization, there are no real competitors to the mixed-use activity centers of downtowns. 3. Our #climate commitments will reinforce the need for shared travel and #walkability. The relationship between #downtown recovery and #transit is also a question being studied at The Brookings Institution Brookings Metro and we are exploring at Institute of Transportation Studies Berkeley looking especially at BART San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority AC Transit
