Loyalty in the hospitality industry is usually about locking in the customer to single brand with points, bonuses and exclusives - especially at Hotels. Name me one hotel brand that doesn't have a loyalty program? But in other parts of the hospitality industry the landscape is less clear. Restaurant loyalty programs tend to me not that effective. There are probably hundreds of loyalty app companies for restaurants that have gone out of business in last 10 years. This is mainly because outside of lunch spots in big cities - we just don't eat at the same restaurant all that often. When I met iCoupon CEO Richard Bye (pictured) at The Moodie Davitt Report’s Airport Food & Beverage + Hospitality Conference in Thailand last September, I knew almost instantly he would make a great interviewee. Last month, I sat down with the serial entrepreneur for an extended conversation which produced one of my best stories of recent years. For the uninitiated, iCoupon is delivering incremental travel retail revenue streams using its innovative digital vouchering platform to a global network that now extends to 250+ airports with more than 160 airlines clients and 200 retailers across more than 2,500 retail/F&B units. That base is growing exponentially and without a direct competitor in sight. Already working with many of the world’s most famous airlines and the big four in travel F&B (Avolta, SSP, Lagardère Travel Retail and Areas), iCoupon is shortly to announce a major venture into duty free. Some significant news for you here. Duffle, a start-up that aims to digitise the travel retail and F&B sector and travel service offerings at airports globally, today revealed travel retail to food & beverage powerhouse Dufry Group as a new strategic partner. Dufry invested an undisclosed amount in Duffle’s recent financing round (subject to regulatory clearance, Dufry committed to seed round capital into Duffle). Dufry joins fellow travel retailer Gebr. Heinemann, which invested via its investment vehicle GHARAGE Ventures. Duffle – already trialled at Copenhagen Airport – provides travellers with a digital platform to access airside duty free shops, brand boutiques and food & beverage (F&B) outlets. According to the company, whatever the traveller needs, be it a perfume or a croissant, will be delivered by Duffle ‘runners’ to their gate or airport lounge within minutes. This story from The Moodie Davitt Report broke last year and Wand is very keen to see its progress. Our brand clients always ask whether they can actually sell to guests from an activation space in our lounges and we always advise that is must be done discretely to avoid the intrusion from direct solicitation. The new service seems to address that issue by allowing lounge guests to shop the physical stores and receive their stuff without ever leaving the calm and relaxation of their comfy chairs. For us this creates the possibility of confirming a seamless link from the physical engagement at the lounge activation space, direction to an online shopping experience from an airport vendor and then personal delivery from the fulfillment service provider. The biggest winners - the lounge guests who get the convenience of shopping without their Onion Soup Gratinee going cold.
