While mass shootings account for a relatively small percentage of overall gun violence in America, they dominate media coverage of gun violence, according to a new report released by the Health Alliance for Violence Intervention (HAVI) and the Institute for the Quantitative Study of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (QSIDE). The report, “News Media Coverage of Gun Violence: A Systematic Review,” documents the findings of a systematic analysis of peer-reviewed academic research—published since the year 2000—that focused on media representations of gun violence in the United States. The findings point to several factors associated with increased media coverage of gun violence, including when women and/or children are involved; when the shooting takes place in a school, religious site, or government building; and when the perpetrator is young, ideologically driven, or shows signs of severe mental illness. The analysis also found that race plays a significant role in how the media depicts gun violence, largely failing to portray perpetrators and victims of color with the same humanity that is afforded to white perpetrators and victims.

The Surgeon General recently issued a landmark advisory declaring firearm violence in America to be a public health crisis with devastating and far-reaching consequences for the nation's health and well-being. This urgent call to action emphasizes the critical research investments to expand short¬term and long¬term outcomes of firearm violence and evaluate specific prevention strategies, including but not limited to domestic violence involving firearms. Survivor Justice Action (SJA) is committed to establishing a national ecosystem of holistic and inclusive support, policies, education, and resources for survivors of domestic violence, the advocates who work closely with them, and those creating laws and legislation related to domestic violence. Thanks to generous funding from Kaiser Permanente and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) in 2021, the California Partnership for Safe Communities (CPSC) and the The National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (NICJR) began conducting an assessment on regional gun violence in the Bay Area in 2022 and 2023. Our experiences providing technical assistance in multiple individual cities throughout the Bay Area for more than a decade revealed connectivity in gun violence between cities.  With Kaiser’s and PSN support we were able to examine whether some aspect of gun violence in the Bay Area has become regional. In summary, our analysis indicates that gun violence in the Bay Area has become increasingly regional, with significant impacts on various Bay Area communities and on major Bay Area freeways. There are a number of steps local leaders and policy makers can take to address this growing problem. For more information, download our report here.

We’re excited to announce that QSIDE and the The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention (HAVI) have partnered on a report titled “News Media Coverage of Gun Violence: A systematic review” (Chad Topaz, PhD & Jude Higdon, EdD, authors). The study examined dozens of recent research publications focusing on media representations of gun violence and found that media focus disproportionately on mass shootings over the more prevalent challenges of community-based gun violence and suicide by gun.
