As Christopher Mims discusses in his book, "Arriving Today", supply chain real estate continues to provide the practical use cases for current state autonomous vehicles and robotics. Airports, college campuses, industrial verticals, etc. are likely to see additional adoptions as some have already adopted autonomous robotics for security purposes. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬, 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐰𝐞 𝐛𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲❔ I just read that in 2022, the UK government announced plans to allow fully-autonomous vehicles on all of the country's roads by 2025. It believes that moving forward with connected and autonomous mobility (CAM) legislation will help to make journeys safer, greener, easier and more reliable. I feel like it is a great goal to have, but the qustion I have is 𝐢𝐟 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓?

The Autonomous-Vienna, Austria | Sept. 14, 2023 I recently spoke on a panel devoted to automated vehicle regulation which included representatives from Cruise and Mercedes-Benz. My overall impression of the event (beyond expert organization) is that the automated vehicle industry makes a huge mistake by trying to market the "safer than a human driver/positive risk balance" narrative as a given fact known today for a certainty. Instead, I suggested that the industry stress responsible approaches to safety with respect to an emerging technology with unknowns. I would urge a narrative like: "Responsibly managing emerging automation technology for a safer future". It is responsible for a manufacturer/developer to do things like accept that one's AV owes a duty of care (Cruise seems to accept this), follow consensus industry safety standards (like SAE J3018 for testing), set speed limits for proper use of an ADS during early deployments (Mercedes sets conservative ODDs), take into account the impact of testing on at-risk communities, etc. I think it is tempting (though misleading) to attempt to bootstrap lagging measures of a positive risk balance with insufficient road miles driven. Attempts at projections with a small dataset might look good in the absence of fatalities, but one or two adverse events can quickly turn that same methodology on its head. The public relations now should focus on a responsible approach to safety so that the technology has the resilience to weather bad news if it comes. Whatever its merits may prove to be, AV tech should have a chance to demonstrate its worth IF it can do so with a responsible approach to risks of the unknown.
