His pursuit of equality, justice, and unity profoundly resonates with our mission at VCC, especially in our commitment to diversity and inclusion within the corporate world. In the military, we learned firsthand the strength that lies in diversity. Each service member's unique background and perspective were crucial to our collective success. At VCC, we honor this principle by fostering an environment where veterans from all backgrounds can thrive and contribute meaningfully to our society and the corporate sector. Today, as we remember Dr. King, let us also recommit ourselves to building a more inclusive and understanding world. Each of us can play a role in bringing his dream to life in our communities and workplaces. By providing guidance and resources to organizations, VCC helps companies create effective veteran ERGs to support and empower veterans in their workplaces. These ERGs can help veterans build networks, develop professionally, and contribute to their companies' success and community cohesion by promoting diversity and inclusion. "Echoes of Valor: When the World Needed Heroes, They Answered" Workex reflect on the significance of World War 2, we are reminded of the unwavering spirit of those who fought for freedom, democracy, and human rights. The war was not only a battle against tyranny and oppression, but also a struggle for the fundamental rights of individuals to live with dignity and pursue their dreams. Two essential rights that were at the forefront of this fight were the right to opportunities and the right to work. The Allied forces believed that every individual, regardless of their background, should have access to equal opportunities to grow, learn, and contribute to society. This meant fighting against discriminatory policies and systems that denied people their basic rights. The right to work was also a crucial aspect of this struggle. The war effort required the collective labor of millions of people, who worked tirelessly to support the war effort. From factory workers to soldiers, every individual played a vital role in the fight for freedom. The right to work was not only a means of survival but also a symbol of dignity and self-respect. As we commemorate the sacrifices of those who fought in World War 2, we are reminded of the importance of upholding these fundamental rights. As the sun sets on this 80th Anniversary of D-Day, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the immense courage and sacrifice demonstrated on June 6, 1944. On this day, eight decades ago, thousands of Allied soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy, risking and often giving their lives to turn the tide of World War II. Their bravery and dedication set the course for the liberation of Europe and the restoration of peace. Today, we honor the memory of those who fought and fell, and those who survived and carried the scars of war. We are reminded of the values they fought for—freedom, democracy, and the right to live in peace. Their Legacy is a testament to the power of unity and the enduring strength of the human spirit which lives on today. As we commemorate this historic event, I invite you to look inward at your own Legacy and the life you are taking steps to create for yourself, those you love, and those you lead. How are you contributing to the values that those brave souls fought for? In your daily life and in your career, are you making choices that promote unity, justice, and compassion? If not yet, then start now. No one here needs my voice in this fight. However, in researching the recruitment crisis for my book Military Culture Shift, I wanted to study the motivations of generations before who entered the force. Was it possible that the words we use today are not resonating with the current generation? (Spoiler- that’s true). Studying “honor” and “duty” led me down a rabbit hole to WWI doughboys and an era where these words permeated the American culture before men were sent off to war. It turns out, most were raised and inspired by families and a country that valued these ideals so much that women were encouraged to marry and raise men with honor and duty. If we are that upset about the changing of these words at West Point, and the military reflects American society as the 1%- maybe we need to take a hard look at the 99%. As an institution, we were never expected to build something out of nothing.
