The Basics of Rotation in figure skating jumps At its core, rotation in figure skating is all about physics. When a skater jumps, he creates and uses angular momentum—a fancy term for rotation. This first part of the rotation can be called the Initial rotation. Then, when the skater stops the skating motion, he will create an instant rotation. From the take-off until the final air position, the skater will accelerate this rotation by bringing his arms and legs close to his body axis. Pre-Rotation: A Controversial Technique Pre-rotation is when the skater starts rotating before their take-off foot leaves the ice. This technique is often debated among coaches but can be crucial for achieving those complex multi-rotation jumps. I recently talked about this on Instagram. If the skater does too much rotation at the take-off or cheats take-off, it is not done by purpose. It's because of the lack of rhythm. Skaters can build up rotational momentum by initiating the spin before leaving the ground. This helps them achieve the necessary rotations while in the air. On March 23, American figure skater Ilia Malininn became the Men's World Figure Skating Champion. His free-skate received the highest score ever recorded in the history of figure skating. When he was asked what he was focusing on to perform at this level, Ilia's answer was deceptively simple: "I rely on my muscle memory." You and I may not be world-class athletes, but we each have our own muscle memory. That's our body's memory of how we show up at our finest, on any given day. Cultivate that memory.
