Wilmore as we know it today, was established in 1914 when FC Abbott bought 335 acres of farmland owned by Mr. Wilson and Mr. Moore; the area was named after them as “Wil-More”.  Historic Character: It is one of Charlotte's oldest neighborhoods. Fun fact: Prior to the 19th Century, two of Charlotte’s gold mines were located in Wilmore. Our cities are built of neighborhoods. And our neighborhoods were built with a hundred little things (benches, bike lanes, parks, sidewalks, light posts, flower gardens, cafes, street vendors, etc.). What would happen if we took our dreams to rebuild a better neighborhood and combined it with our ability to do little things? Maybe we could build a better block. As Dallas Park and Recreation Board President in 2017, I fought alongside my colleagues and community advocates for bond investments in parks, trails, aquatic centers, and recreation centers. The results speak for themselves. Voters overwhelmingly approved the 2017 parks bond for transformative projects all over the city, including: 🤸♂️ A 41,000-square-foot gem of a recreation center in Singing Hills, "a landmark right here in the heart of District 8," said Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins. 🚲 A public-private match for the Trinity Forest Spine Trail, which opened this fall linking White Rock Lake and the Great Trinity Forest. Council members Jesse Moreno, Paula Caldwell Blackmon, and Adam Bazaldua led the ribbon cutting celebration in October. "We have a bond coming up and this needs to absolutely be prioritized," Bazaldua proclaimed. "These are the spaces that bring communities together in more ways than one." 🏞 Match funding for three new Downtown parks, West End Square, Carpenter Park, and Harwood Park, all of which are now opened. They serve as national models for how to transform urban streets and parking lots into green spaces that drive economic development and build stronger neighborhoods. Now, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson, Park Board President Arun Agarwal, city Greening Czar Garrett Boone and many others are fighting the good fight once again for funding parks in the 2024 Bond Program. As Mayor Johnson told CBS 11's Jack Fink in an interview earlier this week, "it's not often that you find a policy solution that gives you such a high return on investment... we're good at parks, we actually know what we're doing, we develop parks well, our parks system is excellent. A Proposed New Park in Auburn, AL – Ann Pearson Park A new park was announced at a recent Auburn City Council meeting. Ann Pearson Park in Auburn will be the first park on the north side of town, and the project is set to move fast! The park is named after Ann Pearson, an Auburn philanthropist and historic preservationist, the park not only honors her in name but also encompasses the Ann Pearson estate. Owned by Auburn University Real Estate Foundation Inc., the 47-acre estate is overseen by the Georgia-Alabama Land Trust. Auburn University Real Estate Foundation, Inc. approached the city and offered the use of the property for a passive park. The Georgia-Alabama Land Trust is the largest regional land trust in the Southeast and has jurisdiction over the property’s conservation easement. According to reports, the Pearson family put the property with the land trust in order to prevent it from being developed. City Manager Megan McGowen Crouch announced that it is under this trust that the passive park project has been approved. Plans for Ann Pearson Park in Auburn have already been developed and received the trust’s stamp of approval. These plans include: Nature playground One-mile gravel trail Nature trail Large open space Exercise stations Disc golf course Picnic areas Hammock pods A 600-square-foot pavilion | A 300-square-foot pavilion Restrooms Under the Georgia-Alabama Land Trust conservation easement, organized ball fields are not allowed. This doesn’t mean families are not allowed to play soccer or throw a ball; it just means there are no athletics in competition format that can take place there. Once open, you can find Ann Pearson Park in Auburn off north Shelton Mill Road, across from the Pearson family home and Noble Hall, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. As the population of Auburn continues to expand, so do the projects and opportunities in the town, and Ann Pearson Park is just one of many highly-anticipated community projects.
