This decision allows us to reduce our footprint and reallocate resources to improve our assets, including updating the 55-year-old irrigation system at Ingersoll Golf Course. Rob Mungovan from the Wild Trout trust was out visiting one of East Mercia rivers trust partnership projects to look for spawning trout( littered with redds) and spotted the start of a stage zero landscape forming. We just need to persuade the landowners to add some floodplain wood to further help a multi thread system to evolve! Project was delivered a couple of years ago where gravel has been added and since then poplars have fallen into channel further assisting its evolution. Lastly this is still a farmed landscape and grazed by cows, water and farming can co exist and isn’t a new issue. I grew up in Wessex where they deliberately drowned meadows to get an early grass crop and it wasn’t that long ago that Lincolnshire used “warping” to deliberately flood fields to drop out nutrient rich sediments to promote lush grass growth for grazing. Wet landscapes were productive that’s why they were drained to access this rich soil but that water has to go somewhere and if it’s out to sea then we are missing out on aquifer recharge and subsequent benefits to drinking water and irrigation that we need also as a society. I guess it’s just trying to find the right balance and locations for interventions and supporting landowners with this. I work with some excellent land managers and graziers which hopefully provide templates and case studies for others that are unsure.
