Another thought-provoking article in this month's OncLive by Maurie Markman, MD... as there are SO MANY advancements in healthcare and science overall, are we doing a good enough job tackling the tough patient care questions on realistic/unrealistic hope? "While there will likely be little (if any) disagreement with the general concept of the importance of hope following the diagnosis of cancer, concerns have been raised about certain beliefs associated with this process that may result in unrealistic, even potentially harmful, expectations based on objective, statistically defined anticipated outcomes observed in others in similar clinical situations." #oncology #clinicaltrials #survivorship #cancer #patientcare

#QualityOfLife or #Quantity? That is (sometimes) the question. Is it better to provide oncology treatments that promise 1-2 weeks of gaining life with a load of #SideEffects or having #PlainConversations with people who struggle with #cancer about their realistic future and #palliative care to cope with #symptoms? Out of the Hamlet paraphrasing, there is an urgent need to reflect about the role of #oncologists in explaining honesty advantages and disadvantages of medications with marginal benefits. Dr. Bishal Gyawali and Dr. Christopher Booth are part of a group of oncologists who “have started a campaign through their website, journal articles and podcasts encouraging honest conversations about use of the drugs with cancer patients, their families and experts. The goal of what they call "common-sense oncology" is to prioritize treatments that meaningfully improve survival and quality of life. They aim to address what they see as problems in the field, such as a lack of #CriticalThinking in oncology training, falling standards for drug approvals and avoidance of #EndOfLife discussions”. #PalliativeCare #HealthLiteracy #CriticalThinking #Awarness #PlainCommunication

Its getting harder and harder to scale best practices with all of the wonderful innovation in the cancer space. How can we be sure every cancer patient has a care team with the tools they need to get them on the best path, whether standard of care or clinical trial? Great discussion with leaders in the #precisionmedicine space.

While this new study from the University of Chicago found that palliative care utilization for metastatic breast cancer is increasing, utilization stays quite low at only 20.7% overall. This is up from 14.9% in 2004. PC enrollment was lower for minorities, including only 16.0% for Hispanic patients, though it has increased for all ethnic groups since 2004. Integration of palliative care into oncology programs, especially for minority and underserved populations, is definitely called for.
